Aim: To understand the research techniques, collection, analysis and interpretation of data and
representation of data, research design with relevance to Urban and Regional Planning.

Unit - 1 Introduction to Research Methodology
Objective of Research, Types of Research, Research Methods and Methodology,
Scientific method of Research, Research Process. Types of research in architecture,
areas of research in architecture, qualitative and quantitative paradigms
Unit - 2 Research Problem
Definition of Research Problem, Selection of Research Problem, Need for defining
the Problem, Techniques for defining a Problem, Development of hypothesis
Unit - 3 Research Design
Components of research design – formulating the research questions, hypothesis,
choosing the sample, methods of data collection, analyzing the data and inferring
from the data. Concepts of dependent and independent variables, unit of analysis.
Defining the scope and limitations of a research plan, significance of the research
outcome. Preparing time schedule & budget for a research plan.
Unit - 4 Referencing Information Sources
Using secondary sources of information: using an Encyclopaedia, bibliography card,
translation card catalogue information, periodic indexes and usage, compiling
preliminary bibliography; Referencing documentation sources: styles of footnotes,
endnotes etc., model bibliography entries.
Unit - 5 Sampling Design: Quantitative and Qualitative
Quantitative data collection: Census and Sample survey, Implication of Sample
design, Steps in Sampling, Characteristics of a good Sample design, Types of Sample
design.
Methods of qualitative data collection in Architecture: Interview Techniques:
Questionnaires /Face to face Interviews / Internet survey. Designing a
Questionnaire / Interview schedule. Visual Techniques: Observations (participant /
non‐participant / direct), activity mapping, accession/erosion trace observations,
cognitive maps, etc.

Unit – 5 Social Infrastructure and Green Infrastructure

Dr. Harish Gupta


University College Of Engineering, Osmania University, Hyderabad
Harish Gupta is an UGC-Assistant Professor at Dept. of Civil Engineering, University College of Engineering (A), Osmania University, Hyderabad. Dr Gupta studied M.Sc. (Geology)  at
Dungar College, Bikaner (affiliated to MDS University, Ajmer) and obtained PhD (Earth Sciences) from IIT Roorkee. He performed Post-Doctoral Research at Academia Sinica, Taiwan
and Xiamen University, China. He joined as Assistant Professor at Osmania University, Hyderabad in 2013 through UGC’s Faculty Recharge Programme. He offers courses on
Environmental Sciences, Disaster Management, Engineering Geology, etc. to BE students. He also teaches ME students from Geotechnical and Mining Engineering courses. His major
field of research is Earth Surface Process and Climate Moderation; Surface Hydrology, Global Bio-geochemical Cycles; Environmental Pollutants in rivers and Urban Water
Management. He has published several research papers in these areas and is also guiding students for ME Dissertation and PhD research. He is an awardee of research grants from
SERB, UGC and SPARC (MHRD) etc.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from for everyone, irrespective of backgrounds.
However, if you wish to get a certificate, you need to pay examination fee and appear for internal and a proctored exam, which will be conducted by the National Testing Agency
(NTA).
Weightage: For Internal assessment-30% for in-course assessment, and 70% for end-term proctored exam. Minimum 40% marks need to be secured both in internal and
proctored exams.
Exam registration fee: Rs. 1000/- for unreservedl category students, Rs. 500 for SC/ST category students.
Date of exam: May 8, 2021  (All related information will be notified on SWAYAM platform)
If you succeed in the examination, a certificate will be issued by the MoE (previously MHRD) and credit transfer certificate for eligible participants will be issued by Osmania
University,  Hyderabad.
