SCIENCE 5- QUARTER 1 WEEK COMPETENCIES 1 5: Recognize the importance of 5 R’s in waste management. | 2. Practice the 5 R techniques in minimizing waste. LESSON 3: RESPONSIBLE LIVING WITH MATTER As you depend on matter, you recognize the need to use matter safely and responsibly. One of these is proper management of waste or a material or that you throw away or discard because you no longer have use for it PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT Managing our waste and its disposal is very important Our country should have a program of waste management in place to secure the protection of the environment and its resosurces. WASTE MANAGEMENT refers to the process by which garbage is properly collected, transported and proper disposal of trash and other waste in the Philippines , waste disposal is a major environmental concern, tons of trashes are thrown every year into dumpsites that are already filled up. If problem is not addressed correctly ,the country will no longer have space for dumpsites and this could lead to serious health isues and to flooding due to the increase of wastes. Part of managing our waste is having solutions to recycle things that are not really garbage. This makes garbage useful and of value to us. We canbe a part of solutions in managing our waste. One of the best solutions in managing out our waste is to make use of the 5 R's. Five R's of responsible waste management : 1.Reduce 2.Reuse 3.Recycle 4.Recover 5.Repair 16 REDUCE Red thistiwel ae ene concept of lessening the waste we produce. Buy things that are of good quality to avoid throwing them once broken. 9. Buy in bulk to avoid throwing containers. 10. Avoid purchasing things that have too much packaging. The extra materials go to the garbage. REUSE To reuse an item is to use it again purpose. Old tires can be used in making slippers, plant pots and even alternative Swing seats. 7. Woodcuttings can be made into woodcrafts or firewood. 8. Old newspapers can be made into paper mache decors or packaging materials for glassware. 9. Use rechargeable battries to reduce unnecessary waste compared with regular batteries. 10. Start a compost bin using biodegradable materials such as fruit and vegetable peelings, used coffee grounds , old tea bags and others. They decompose and become organic fertilizer for the plants and soil. RECYCLE You recycle materials when you trans serves a purpose different from that followingexamples of recycling. form them into a new item that of the original item. Old newspapers can be cut into small pieces and turned into a material called mulch that can then be molded into thin sheets of paper. 3. Plastic bottles of soda drinks can be used as containers for small plants.Tin cans that were used to hold cookies, crackers, or biscuits can be transformed into sewing boxes or containers in which to keep greetingcards, school supplies and the like. RECOVER s getting materials or substances from garbage Waste recovery involve 'd then reused. Here are some ways of waste and having these processes recovery: 1. Through waste management, we can find efective ways of dealing with trash so as to address problems that it may cause us. Through the concept of RECOVER materials i i Instead of using fossil fuels, electricity can be generated from soli liquid wastes. Some methods include: sane Incineration Gasification Pyrolysis Anaerobic digestion fermentation vr wne 19 - Incineration is the is Proce: enough oxyge: Ss of burning solid waste matrials wherein there n to support burning or combustion. 2. Biogas is a gaseous fuel produced without oxygen, Digester is an airless container that is warmed and sealed where bacteria ferment matrials such as liquids and animal manure to produce biogas. 6.Fermentation is the process of breaking down waste materials using microorganisms and yeasts. We benefit from the diffeent methods of breaking down solid and liquid materials because of what they can produce. One of which is fuel, which is very important in providing us with our electricity. These methods is to help us find solutions to our waste problem. But it is always important for us to remember that as consumers, We need to be responsible for the trash we produce. 20
