There is an appointed Byzantine Tone listed on Sundays for each week, which is used by the
Chanters. Below is a cross reference chart comparing the numbering of the tones in Byzan-
tine verses Church Slavonic. Note: Church Slavonic is not included in this booklet.

This is an abbreviation for Matins (Orthros) Gospel. On Sundays, eleven alternating Gospel
readings for Matins are listed. They are replaced by other Gospel readings on certain Great
Feasts.
Liturgy Epistle & Gospel (Readings) -
Readings marked "(M)" [for Menaion] are for a feast or saint occurring on that date. Oth-
erwise, readings are from the week indicated, e.g. (P29) is the 29th week of Pentecost; (L1) is
the 1st week of St. Luke's Gospel, etc.
Triodion -
Pre-Lenten & Lenten services & readings beginning Publican & Pharisee Sunday and ending
on Holy & Great Saturday.
Holy Week -
Holy Week is a fast week. Holy & Great Thursday is a fast day with wine & oil permitted.

The Septuagint has four chapters in the book of the Holy Prophet Joel. Protestant editions of the Old Testament combine chapters two
and three into one, so they treat chapter four as chapter three.

During weekdays of Great Lent, there are no regular daily Liturgies. Instead the Sixth Hour and Vespers have daily readings taken from
the Septuagint. A schedule of these readings is included at the end of this booklet.
