The poem Prince and Princess is contained in the Year 3 syllabus. I
choose the poem because I find it is short with only two stanzas and 8 lines. This has fulfill the principle of suitability where the language to learn by young learner suppose to be simple and suit with the ability of the children. This is because; students have different level of ability and English proficiency. The sentence and phrase is also clear. The poet also uses the manner phrases such as “Please” on the third and seventh line. The phrase used will teach students to have more manners while pleading others for help. By saying “please”, it also indicates the symbol of courtesy. The moral value that students get from the poem had met the pedagogical principle which is emphasizing on the moral value. Besides, the theme on prince and princess might as well attract students’ attention. By using the poem, the pedagogical principle that is integrating English
language with the content can also fulfill. For example, while conducting the reciting poem activity, students might improve their reading, speaking as well as listening skills. This is because the students will receive help from the teacher, their will listen to the teacher pronunciation first before they try to recite the poem on their own. After students read with the guidance, they should able to read and understand the sentence independently. When learning poem, students are especially like to sing and move around. Therefore, if reciting poem included some actions, students will learn more effectively. According to learning theory, learning through playing will increase students’ interest in learning. Also, according to the English language curriculum content, students should also be mastered the grammar rules that are tenses according to their stages. Words such as was, wanted, said and would are the examples of the past tense words that students should have mastered. Therefore, it has fulfills the language content that has been stated in the curriculum. Children at this stage should know simple past tense.
Besides, the other factor in choosing the poem is based on the
pedagogical principles where the content of the materials should be familiar and had enjoyable experiences. For example, the poem is about the prince’s and princess’s wish for their present. This is familiar with the students because they also have their own wish, and usually, boys will like to have big present whereas girls will like to have pretty dresses. Students might as well relate when they usually will receive present. Then, students are required to make a role play on the situation, then they will repeat the poem by modify it using their own wishes.
