Case Study 3

Mr. Y, a father of three, is a full-time investment banker who is also doing part-time graduate
studies. Although Mr. Y has a domestic helper, he still needs to read bedtime stories to his
children and put them to bed. After his children have fallen asleep, he still needs to attend to
some work-related emails and then he will study and complete his assignments for his Masters
program late at night. This is a daily affair, and he only gets 5 hours of sleep every night on
weekdays. Even though he makes up for it on weekends, he still feels lethargic most of the time.
For the past few months since he started his part time M.Sc. course, he started to develop
migraine, and every now and again, he felt irritable and would indulge in alcohol to let off
steam. To add fuel to the fire, he suffers from more severe migraine as part of the hangover.

Mr. Y started seeing a counselor for stress management. His wife brought him to a Chinese
physician for his migraine, and this was the prescription given to Mr. Y for his migraine:

1. Sichuan lovage root (Chuan Xiong 川芎)

2. Mint (Bo He 薄荷)
3. Schizonepeta stem or bud (Jing Jie 荆芥)
4. Notopterygium root (Qiang Huo 羌活)
5. Dahurian Angelica Root (Bai Zhi 白芷)
6. Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Jiu Gan Cao 炙甘草)
7. Asarum Sieboldii(Xi Xin 细辛)
8. Ledebouriella root (Fang Feng 防风)
