FT Se STAGE asses Rima BRIDGES & STRUCTURES RESEARCH,DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT Heavy Axle Load Operation Guidelines issued to zonal railways for instrumentation and associated with Zonal Railways for Instrumentation of Bridges to assess the actual loadings on the bridges. and to access the capacity of bridges to carry Heavy ‘Axle Loading. Updation of Codes, Manual & Specifications as Per Current DevelopmentNeeds m™ BridgeRules > A&C Slip No. 41 regarding rebuilding/strengthening/ rehabilitation of bridges on indian Railways to "25tloading- 2008" and “DFC loading’ has been issued (0n 17.08.2008. > A&C Slip No. 42 regarding determining the seismic forces has been issued 17.08.2008. = Concrete Bridge Code > A&C Slip No. 12 has been issued on (02.06.2009 based on recommendations of BTDG and Extra-ordinary BSC. = Bridge Substructure and Foundation Code > A&C Slip No. 29 regarding modification of formulae for total horizontal force has been issued on 28.07.2009. = Manual on the Design and construction of Well and Pile Foundations > A&C Slip No. 2 regarding allowable v bearing pressure for well foundation has been issued on 09.03.2010. Bridge Standards Committees, 78” BSC meeting was held on 15" and 16” January, 2010 at RDSO, Lucknow. In the meeting, 14 ew items and 27 pending items were deliberated. Detailed deliberation took place on Guidelines of Seismic Design of Railway Bridges. Committee has recommended for issuing the Guidelines to Zonal Railways for their comments and suggestions for improvement and subsequent amendment to IRS Bridge Rules based on feedback of Railways. Next BSC meeting was decided to be held at SC Railway, Secunderabad. Consultancy/Proof Checking Works = BBS Die is actively associated in providing consultancy to PSUs/Private rolling stock manufacturersiZonal Railways (for speed certification of their new rolling stocks). = Review of design basis note of Cauvery Bridge on ‘South Western Railway. = Fatigue life estimation of steel girder of Bridge No. 586 on East Coast Railway was done and a residual fatigue life of 74 years was estimated based on results of instrumentation. Thus, the steel girders ofthis bridge can be retained for. = Proof checking of undersiung open web girder design of 20.5m span 25t loading for NW Railway. = Consultancy was provided for new Bridge No. 152 on Jaipur Bandikui Section for removal of ‘speed restriction of 30 mph imposed by CRS. Inspection and Testing B&S Directorate is having a well furnished laboratory having following facilities: = Impact & Static Testing Facility for full scale sleepers. = Concrete Core Cutting Machine. = NDT Testing of Concrete Bridges with Corrosion Analyser, Profometer, Rebound Hammer, CAPO Test & Lock Test, WINDSOR Probe etc. = Testing of Steel Bridges by Acoustic Emission Technique Residual Life Assessment of Steel Bridges. Testing of Brick & Stone Masonry by FLAT Jack Method, In recent past following testing and inspection works were carried out: = Fatigue cracks noticed in 30.5m_underslung girder of bridge No. 46 of SEC Rallway designed toRDSO’s Drg. No. BA-6081, were studied and a report was submitted to zonai railway suggesting strengthening measures. = Inspection of PSC 30.5m box girder bridge (Bridge No.140) near Bhilwara of Ajmer Division ‘on NW Railway. ‘General view of Bridge No. 140, | Crushing/cracking of bed blocks in Sakleshpur- Subrahumanya Road Ghat section of Hasan- Mangalore section, = Cracks in piers and abutments of Br.No.133, 165, & 263 in Sakieshpur-Subramanya Road of SW Railway, ™ Cracks in channel sleeper on 8 Degree Curve on bridges on Hassan-Mangalore section. | _ Inspection of NDT Testing of ROB at HSR on NW. Railway, m= Inspection and NDT testing of ROB at Kopri (Thane) C Railway = NDT testing of Bridge No. 281 on NE Railway as. desired by CRS/ NE Circle Testing of concrete sleepers by cutting cores in Asansol Division of Easter Railway as per requirement of ED/QA (Civil) Oscillation Trial and Speed Certificate of Various Rolling Stocks B&S Dte has a major role in issuing the speed certificate and finalizing the oscillation trial reports for al ‘new rolling stock including locomotives. In last one and. a half year more than 200 speed certificates and more than 40 reports for trial of various types of rolling stocks, were dealt. RESEARCH PROJECT COMPLETED Revision of Fatigue Provisions in IRS Steel Bridge Code This project has been completed. Detailed deliberation took place in 78” BSC Meeting in January, 2009 on Revisions of fatigue provision in IRS Steel Bridge Code based on studies done by lIT/Roorkee. There was a consensus that proposed provision being rational should be adopted for fatigue check of steel bridges. Railway board has accepted the recommendations and asked to assess the implications of the proposed provisions before finally incorporating in Steel Bridge Code. Technical Guidelines In addition to the guidelines issued for running of 25t loaded trains on existing bridges and various BS Publications RDSO has issued following more Draft Guidelines to all Zonal Railways for remarks. Guidelines on Satellite Imagery Studies Guidelines on the Acoustic Emission Testing of Railway Bridges. = Guidelines on Under Water inspection of Bridges. = Guidelines on fabrication on FOB, Guidelines on Residual Fatigue Life Assessment of Steel Girder Bridges. Inspection of Fabrication of Steel Girders RDSO has inspected 12386t fabricated stee! work of Triangulated Girders and 3871t of Welded Girders from April 2009 to March 2010 works of Steel Girders of different Zonal Railways, Training RDSO organized training on fabrication and erection on steel bridge gitder at Bridge Training Institute at Mugulsarai in the month October, 2009 & Bridge Training Institute at Manmad in November, 2009.
