Mixed Numbers –a number that combines an integer and a fraction. E.g.

, -8 ½ The integer in a mixed

number can be re-written as an improper fraction with the same denominator as the mixed number.
E.g., -8 ½ = -16/2 + ½ or -17/2

Proper Fraction – A fraction that is less than one with the numerator being less than the denominator.
¾

Improper Fraction – A fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator. 5 /4

Mixed Number – A number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction. 4½

Cross Cancel – Instead of reducing the fraction at the end of the problem, you can cross-cancel before
you multiply. Cross-canceling means that when multiplying fractions you can reduce the numerator of
one fraction with the denominator of another. Basically, cross canceling is simplifying before you
multiply!

Numerator- the top number, which refers to how many parts (of a whole you have. (ex.naa sac p)

Denominator- the bottom number ,which refers to the total number of parts making up the whole.
(ex.naa sac p)

STEPS FOR MULTIPLYING AND MIXED NUMBERS

 Step 1 Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.

 Step 2 Cross cancel when possible.
 Step 3 Multiply the numerators. Multiply the denominators.
 Step 4 Simplify.

Example: Multiply 6 2/3 × 15/16 (NAA SA PAPEL ANG SOLVING)
