Let Us Discover

What is the role of a school counselor? Perhaps you'd like to work as a school
counselor. Perhaps you're just wondering about what a counselor does in your
school, industry, neighbourhood, or even clinical settings. This module will guide you
towards a better understanding of the various duties and functions of a counselor.
So, here are the responsibilities of a counselor.

1. Consultant – counselor serve as student advocates by consulting with students,

parents, teachers, and others regarding strategies to help students and their families.

2. Teacher - We have a set curriculum, just as teachers do, that is mandated by

Deped. We teach from these standards to all classes during our Classroom Guided
Instruction.

3. Personal Counselor - We serve as mentors, role models, and a confidante to
students and faculty members who need someone to share their burdens with during
various times of their lives.

4. Peer Facilitator -Counselors can train students as peer mediators, conflict

managers, tutors, and mentors.

5. Test Coordinator- Counselors serve as school test coordinators for the

Department of Education’s testing program. In this critical role, counselors ensure
that all aspects of testing are smooth from the early stages of planning and staff
training to the final stages of test administration and make-ups.

6. Career Counselor - Counselors help students investigate the world of work as

well as their personal interests, develop job skills, apply for jobs, write resumes, and
seek employment.

7. Program Manager - A counselor must be organized and up-to date on the latest
curriculum and standards given by the state and local systems in order to develop a
well-rounded program.

8. Researcher – Counselors must analyze their individual school’s data results from
testing. They also evaluate our program regularly and make necessary changes.
They must research the latest data and update our resources periodically.

9. Public Relations Consultant - The counselor helps others in the school

understand the counseling program. The counselor may promote the program
through various activities such as the creation of a website, blog, or newsletter. She
may also reach out to the community and its resources to benefit the school and/or
students.

10. Counselor- Provide short–term (brief) counseling in the school.

You might think that because all counselors help patients or clients cope with
problems in their lives, such as mental or emotional distress or stressful life changes,
their work prospects are limited. Counseling, on the other hand, is a broad discipline
with several subspecialties. Counselor positions can be found in a wide variety of
settings.

Counselors operate in a wide range of settings, reflecting the wide range of expertise
within the subject of counseling. They consider the environments in which they are
most interested in working as well as their long-term professional goals when
determining which counseling speciality to pursue.

You can now do a number of things. This time, let us express our heartfelt gratitude
to our school counselors for their invaluable contributions to the majority of us and
our community. How do you believe a school counselor may be able to assist in
resolving some of the most pressing difficulties and concerns, and where should we
look for one?
