Analysis of an Upset

Upset
Upset (foaled 1917 in New Jersey) is notable as the only horse to have ever defeated
Man o' War. Man o' War, who would go on to a career in which he won 20 of his 21
starts, faced Upset in the seventh running of the Sanford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga
Race Course on August 13, 1919.

In today’s parlance, upset can be defined by three distinctions.


An unfulfilled expectation
A thwarted intention
Incomplete and/or misdirected communication

One might become “upset” a transaction did not produce the expected results.
A specific intention was not fulfilled as a result of the transaction
There was an incomplete communication (not all of the essential information was transmitted) or there
was a misdirected communication (the information was sent to the wrong party).
