How to register in the UK as a Nurse if you trained in the EU,EEA or EFTA.

To ensure that the process for recognising professional qualifications is not

disrupted by the UK's exit from the EU, the UK government has enacted legislation -
( SI 2019/593, SI2019/585, SI2020/1394 ).

The legislation guarantees that qualifications previously automatically recognised

with minimal barriers by UK regulators of Healthcare professionals recognised
under a near-automatic system.

Note

The near-automatic systems of recognition will last for:

Up to 2 years from 1 st January 2021 in the case of individuals who hold

qualifications awarded in the European Economic Area ( EEA ).

Romania is in the list of countries that allow near-automatic recognition of

qualifications, providing that the qualifications held are:-

Nursing.

1. Diploma de absolvire de asistent medical generalist cu studii superioare de

scurta durata.

2. Diploma de licenta de asistent medical generalist cu studii superioare de lunga

durata.

After reading all of the documentation found in all of the nmc sites, and the
Governments sites, I have found that the information or guidance that is offered
varies quite a lot. I have had to continually go back and forth between sites,
checking what is the correct information, and how this relates to registering in the
UK as a nurse who has trained outside of the UK but in the EU.

After investigating the various government legislation ( SI 2019/593, SI2019/585 and

SI2020/1394 ) I believe that I have found the correct information, that will help you to
register as a nurse in the UK.

Firstly I have checked your certificates against the government legislation and the
appropriate guidance issued by the government including the ANNEX V 2005/36 of
the European Union Law, for guidance regarding near-automatic recognition, and
then on the nmc site, and have found that you qualify for near-automatic
recognition. This means that you should not have to take the Test of Competence,
as the Law states that you qualify for near-automatic recognition.

This alone should substantially reduce the costs of your application to register,
which the nmc state is at least £1077 and possibly substantially more.

Secondly I have investigated the English language tests that the nmc will require,
and there are only 2 that they will accept, namely IELTS and OET. Accordingly these
tests are necessary for you to have your application to be accepted.

The cost of these tests differ by over £100. The IELTS costs £170 - £190 and the OET
costs £345. We will discuss which one you should take when we meet face to face.
