Hi, I’m Leong Wei Khang. We celebrate Chinese New Year

which falls on the first day of the Chinese Lunar calendar.
We clean the house and buy new clothes. These activities
signify a new beginning for us. It is a taboo to sweep the
house on the first day of New Year because it is believed
that we will sweep away good luck. On the eve of New Year,
all our family members gather for a grand reunion. I receive
money in red packets from my parents and married relatives.
We put up red-coloured decorations such as lanterns and
couplets. To us, red symbolizes good fortune. We watch the
famous lion dance which is a symbol of strength and
prosperity. For the next few days, we have open house to
celebrate New Year with our relatives and friends from
different races.

Husna, a friend who had an impact on my life.

Today, I met my school friend, Husna. She was the one who gave new meaning to my
school life. I had lost touch with her when my family transferred from Johor Bahru to Kuala
Kangsar, Perak when I was in Year Five.

I was an only child and my parents loved and spoilt me. They
granted all my wishes. However, my happiness came to an end
when I went to primary school.

I did not know how to react to my classmates when I was in Year

One. I did not want to share my colour pencils or crayons. I wanted
to win all the games we played and would throw a tantrum when I
lost. Soon, no one wanted to be friends with me and I was lonely. I did not like going to
school.

It was Husna who taught me about school life. One day, she told me that I had to change
my character if I wanted to have friends. She said that I should learn to share and care. I
should accept defeat gracefully as it would be impossible to win all the time.

Most importantly, she said that friendship means listening and accepting other people’s
views. She suggested I should learn how to communicate with others. No one cares about
our family background. People choose friends for what they are, not what they have.

I realised what she said was true. I learnt to share and care. I listened to my friends’
views and disagreed when necessary. I became more tolerant and considerate of other’s
feelings. Now, I have many friends. It was Husna who taught me the value of true friendship.
