belt tends to wear out. This belt is driven by two metal drums. To remove the belt driver
side belt should be disconnected from the pulley and drums should be disconnected from
the bed (weighter’s base). Then the belt had to be pulled out. After that we replaced a new
belt. After that same procedure was reversed but before fixing the lock plates to the belt, it
should be aligned. If the belt is miss aligned it will shift into a side and may cause cuts in the
locking plates and on drums too. Therefor it should be aligned well. To do so there are two
screws on the either side of the driver side of the belt and by tightening or loosening of
them the belt can be properly aligned. After aligning the belt we fixed the locking plates
and cleaned the work area.

2.1.11. Alimak Elevator Repair.

The “Pre Heater” is one of the tallest buildings in the plant. For daily works and repairs an
industrial elevator is used. Its manufactures name is Alimak Ltd. and it’s all main
maintenance activities are taken cared by that company as well.
This elevator is running on vertical rack and there are 3 high torque motors to operate the
elevator and each coupled to a gear box having worm and worm gears and have a pinion
that is mounted on the rack. The gear ratio is 14: 1.
The passenger lift is designed to operate safely in 2000 Kg or 21 passengers. And also there
are safety rules regarding when traveling in it. Passengers should not lean on doors and all
the doors should be closed well. And a visitor cannot by himself use the elevator and always
a permanent contract or a trainee should be there to operate the elevator.
In one time during my training period I got the opportunity to participate in assembling the
Alimak elevator’s gear boxes and motors. In the following I have illustrated some of the
basic components of the elevator’s gear box and motor.
