COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSING 2 (NCM 3115)

Module 2: Concept of the Community

Definition:

A community is a group of people sharing common geographic boundaries and/or common


values and interest. It functions within a particular socio-cultural context which means that
no communities are alike (Maglaya p. 10).

A.Types of Communities

1.Urban - is a human settlement with a high population density and infrastructure of built
environment.

2. Suburban- areas are lower density areas that separate residential and commercial areas
from one another. They are either part of a city or urban area, or exist as a separate
residential community within commuting distance of a city.

3. Rural – In general, a rural area or countryside is geographic area that is located outside
towns and cities. Area is an open swath of land that has few homes or other buildings, and
not very many people. Population density is very low.

B.Characteristics of a Healthy Community (Maglaya p.11)

1.Awareness that “we are community”


2.Conservation of natural resources
3.Recognition of , and respect for, the existence of subgroups
4.Participation of subgroups in community affairs
5.Preparation to meet crises
6.Ability to problem-solve

E. Conditions in the Community Affecting Health

1. People- these are variables that affect the health of the community include the size
density, composition, rate of growth or decline, cultural characteristics, mobility, social class,
and education level.
2. Location – Community is affected by natural and man-made variables.
Natural factor –consists of geographic features, climate, flora, fauna. Whether the
community is urban or rural
Man-made – soil, air pollution, agricultural by products, indoor pollution
3. Social system – how they interact / link with one another
