LECTURE SUMMARY 2
In the recording, Professor Bryan Gilroy discusses two leading causes for people

relocating to the cities and three fundamental changes that happen there. To

commence with, the lecturer centers on two prominent rationales why rural dwellers

migrate to metropolises. The first reason mentioned is the economic factor. Thousands

of inhabitants, without a doubt, flock to the cities in pursuit of better career prospects

and a decent living. Secondly, higher quality of life is attributed to rural-to-urban

migration. It is also stated that the average age of humans in the countryside is rising

whereas that of the counterpart is lowering. Afterward, the speaker points out three

significant alterations in urban areas. Firstly, the cities are expanding greatly as more

people settle in cities, which triggers the emergence of megacities. The author then

asserts that the meteoric growth of population reshapes the cities. On account of

skyrocketing land prices, there is an increase in their height. In addition, the sector and

the multiple nuclei are likely to be two characteristic models, referring to the

uncontrolled urban sprawl in contemporary cities. The third shift is that cities are

separating into smaller communities, often by ethnic groups and income levels.

Nevertheless, this frequently alienates individuals from their original communities and
