Rationale:

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a historical fiction story which tells a story during World War II
and the Holocaust. In the novel, the main character Bruno wrote a letter to his grandmother about
his new life in "Out-With" and his worries. I decided to write a reply letter from Bruno's
grandmother to Bruno. In the letter, Bruno's grandmother gives advice to Bruno and shows her
inner feelings. Grandmother is a minor character in the book and the author didn't write much
about her. I think grandmother has also an important role in the story because she is the only
person who has strong feelings against Bruno's father becoming a commandant, therefore she is a
counterpoint to the German Nazi genocide. However, she still was to tell Bruno to obey his dad as
she was an actress and she thoroughly knows importance of relationship and interaction between
the people. I want to show more aspects of Bruno's grandmother by describing more
grandmother’s emotional side in my written assignment and I think a personal letter is the best
way to express her feelings and thoughts.

Task:

November 3rd, 1940

Fiedristrasse Str. 16, Berlin, Germany

Dear Bruno,

I was so glad and surprised that I receive your letter. I am sure this is my best thing I ever got.

Since you and your family left Berlin last Christmas, I haven't seen you anymore and we didn't

have a chance to say goodbye before you moved. I was really depressed and missed you very

much. That's why I was surprised and now I will tell you how things going in here.

I know that you want me to visit your new house. To be honest, I really want to but I think

now it is not a good timing because these days I don't feel very well. I have a headache and I take

medicines every day. When I feel better, I will see you as soon as possible, I promise.

Although you all already left Berlin, I still keep on writing plays because it is my biggest

source of happiness. I was thinking for three to four days about which roles are best for you and

Gretel. Once you get back to Berlin, we will have a dinner party, and after finishing palatable

meals, we can choose one or two plays and perform together, or just dance to the piano music.

That will be a wonderful time, won't it?

I remember that you have told me about your three best friends Karl, Daniel, Martin. They

actually miss you. One day I was walking past your house, I saw three little boys standing in front
of the door and calling your name very loudly, so I thought they must be your friends. After I

confirmed, I told them you had moved to another place and will come back to Berlin in a few

months. They all looked depressed when they heard the news and they told me to tell you that they

are waiting for you to come back.

Through the letter, I can see you are unsatisfied with your new life. Actually I was worried

about whether you would adapt to the new house well, but I believe you can do it. You can find

something new that you are interested in. I recommend you can write some plays. Maybe you

have a superb talent for writing plays.

Sometimes I regret last Christmas. I realized that I should respect the your father's decision...

I know sometimes I can't change something into what I want, so only thing I can do is accept it.

The only thing that I want you to know is that war is the worst thing in the world. It is like a

ruthless devil which takes away innocent people's lives. Perhaps you do not really understand that

now, but when you grow up you will know it. Even though I don't agree with your parents'

decision or you have an augment with them, I still want you to respect and obey them. I

understand sometimes your father only considers about his job, but I am sure that his love for you

always exists. I believe you still follow the rules of conducts there. Especially, do not go outside

without your parent's permission, I know you want to be an explorer but be careful when you are

exploring , safety is the most important.

Tell your parents that don't need to worry about us. Your grandfather and I are safe in Berlin.

The chilling winter is coming again, you should wear more clothes before you catch a cold. Hope

to see you in Christmas this year.
