The webinar is entitled Labor Relations and Employees' Rights in Joining Labor Unions.

Its objective is to equipped students like me with knowledge with regards to labor relations so

that we can be aware of our rights and limitations as a future employer or employee. The speaker

was able to discuss topics for us to further understand the concept of labor relations and

employees’ rights.

In line with this, the school invited resource speakers from the industry to share real

business experiences in the field of human resources management, marketing, finance, and

operations management. The resource speaker is Ms. Maria Rima C. Hernandez a representative

from the regional government office department of labor and employment. She is the current

chief of the technical services and support division for labor relations and standard in region

three. With that the topics discussed were the following: the basic labor relation concepts,

security of tenure, termination and procedural due process, and the right to self-organization.

The first thing that I learned is about the employment relationship which refers to the

written or oral agreement or engagement between the employer and the employee without force

or compulsion. I was able to grasp the idea that the there are four factors to determine if the

employer-employee relationship exists in the organization. The first factor is about “who hired

you?” or the selection and engagement of the employee. While the second one is about “who

compensates you?” or the payment of wages factor. Then, the third one is about “who will have

the authority to dismiss you?” or the power of dismissal factor. Lastly, it is about “who will
supervise you?” or the power to control the employee’s conduct factor. Moreover, the second

lesson that I have learned from this webinar is about the concept the employer has management

prerogatives. I get to know that this refers to the rights of a worker or an employee. As for the

management on the other hand, it refers to the rights, limitations and power. It also included two

aspects of the management such as the operational or the techniques, strategies and operations

you are going to adapt to make the business prosper and the personnel aspect or the means to

prescribe policies and rules inclined with the employees’ actions and disciplines. The third

lesson that I was able to ascertain is about the employees’ obligations and responsibilities. It is

stated here that the employees are to work in exchange of compensation, that they should follow

the company rules and policies, and they should observe proper care of the company’s facilities,

equipment and supplies.

After taking everything into account, I believe that I am now equipped with the basic

knowledge that have with regards to employment relations. I will use this knowledge so that I

can be aware of my rights – if I am receiving them right or not. With that, I will apply all these to

my future endeavors as a professional or as an employee to be able to exercise my rights and do

my responsibilities right.
