 29 December, 6:00 AM: Captain Rafael Dominguez read him his verdict (or the official notice of
his execution). To be shot the next day at 7:00 AM at the Luneta de Bagumbayan (Rizal Park).

 29 December, 7:00 AM: To convince Rizal to return to the Catholic fold, he was transferred to
the chapel cell, which was adorned by religious images. The Jesuit priests, Fathers Miguel
Saderra Mata and Luis Viza were his first visitors.
 29 December, 7:15 AM: After Fr. Saderra Left, Rizal asked Fr. Viza for the Statuette of the Sacred
Heart which he carved when he was still a student at the Ateneo Municipal in Intramuros. Fr.
Viza, in reply, took the statuette out of the pocket of his soutane. The statuette remained in the
cell where Rizal prayed and confessed, attended mass, and received Holy Communion.

 29 December, 8:00 AM: Fr. Antonio Rosell, a friend of Rizal, gladly eaten a fine breakfast with
him. Lt. Luis Taviel de Andrade joins them.
 29 December, 9:00 AM: Fr. Federico Faura, one of Rizal’s favorite mentors, visited him. The
priest was upset about how his favorite student had painted such a dark picture of the
Philippines with his novels. Fr. Faura once said that Rizal would lose his head for writing the Noli
Me Tangere.

 29 December, 10:00 AM: He was visited by Fr. Jose Vilaclara and Fr. Vicente Balaguer. Followed
by a Spanish journalist, Santiago Mataix who interviewed him for the newspaper ‘El Heraldo de
Madrid’.
 29 December, 12:00-3:30 PM: Rizal was left alone in his cell. He had lunch, wrote letters, and
wrote his farewell poem of 14 stanzas which he wrote in his flowing handwriting. He hid it inside
his alcohol cooking stove. The untitled poem was later known as Mi Ultimo Adios (My Last
Farewell).

 29 December, 4:00 PM: Rizal’s mother, Teodora Alonso, visited him. They had a very emotional
encounter. Then Rizal’s sister, Trinidad, entered to fetch her mother. Rizal whispered to her in
English referring to the alcohol stove, “There is something inside.”
 29 December, 6:00 PM: Rizal was visited by Don Silvirio Lopez Tuñon, the Dean of the Manila
Cathedral.
 29 December, 8:00 PM: Rizal had his last supper where he informed Capt. Dominguez that he
forgave his enemies including the military judges who condemned him to death.
 29 December, 9:30 PM: Rizal was visited by the fiscal of the Royal Audiencia of Manila, Don
Gaspar Cestaño with whom Rizal offered the best chair of the cell. He had good impression of
Rizal’s intelligence and noble character after their pleasant conversation.
 30 December, 5:00 AM: Teary-eyed Josephine Bracken and Josefa Rizal came. According to the
testimony of the agent of the Cuerpo de Vigilancia, Josephine and Rizal were married. Josephine
was gifted by Rizal with the classic Thomas á Kempis book Imitations of Christ in which he
inscribed, “To my dear and unhappy wife, Josephine, December 30th, 1896, Jose Rizal.” They
embraced for the last time.
