Sheffield Precast Tile Slab was a system developed in 1936 by Sheffield Brick and Tile Company of Sheffield, Lowa. It was used until 1966. The initial system used 5” tiles; 6 1/2” and 8” tiles were added between 1958 and 1960. The individual tiles were 8 wide, 12” long and 5”, 6 1/2” or 8” high. The tiles had continuous 2 1/4” x 21/4” recesses in the bottom face of the tiles. ‘The “system” consisted of the tiles with deformed reinforcing bars and grout in the 2 1/4” x 2 1/4” recesses and concrete topping varying in thickness from 1 1/2” to 4”. The “system” collapsed in some Mid-west schools during the mid 1980's.. Excessive deflections were found in many more buildings. ‘The following tables and design information were obtained from Sheffield Brick and Tile Company in March 1986. — SHEFFIELD PRECAST TILE SLAB NO. 5 STANDARD DUTY SECTION LOADING TABLES AND DESIGN INFORMATION Tenpersture reinforcing as required Heed pian tint eo eel aes Z - = rege ie : 2 iL Ze pgee hel ES ae stow aca TILE DIMENSIONS © TYPICAL SLAB.
