HIPÓLITO UNANUE
Hipólito Unanue was a doctor, a politician, a college professor and precursor of the
independence of Perú. He was born in Arica, a city that once belonged to Perú but now
is part of Chile. Hipólito was born on August 13 th in 1755, that means he grew up during
colonial period of Perú. Unfortunately, he died on July 15 th in 1833 in the city of Cañete
from an illness. In 1792, he founded an anatomical amphitheater at the National
University of San Marcos. He also was founder of the medical school “San Fernando” of
that university. Unanue was editor of the "Mercurio Peruano" newspaper, spreading the
intellectual ideas of science.
