What I have pondered upon after seeing the video is that mathematics
is the queen of sciences. The language of physics and chemistry, the
language of engineering and architecture. It is the foundation of all sciences,
the foundation of all knowledge.
We all know that math is the language of the universe. It is the language that
describes the patterns and relationships between things. But does math
actually reveal reality, or is it just a tool that we use to understand the world
around us?
The topic is hefty and debatable. Some people believe that math is a human
invention, and therefore it is limited by our own perception. Others believe that
math is the language of the universe, and it is a way of understanding reality
itself.
Personally, I lean more towards the latter. I believe that math does reveal
reality. After all, the universe is full of patterns and relationships. And math is
the language that describes those patterns and relationships.
There are many examples of this. Based on the video, one example is the
way that math can help us understand the behavior of particles, from its mass,
to the amount electric charge, the spin, and speed of particles, those are
numbers. By understanding the patterns and relationships between particles,
we can better understand the universe as a whole.
Based on the analysis of one of the panels from the video, I think his name
was Max Tegmark, in which I would like to highlight as well is that
Mathematics is a tool which great minds over the millennia have developed to
be able to understand or explain our physical world and the universe. It’s like
Mathematics is discovered rather than invented. The things we have learned
through mathematical exploration describes real objects and dynamic
interactions. We are like living in a mathematical structure. We are a small
part of something bigger, but how does one describe that structure?
Eventually, using mathematics, we would quench for a lot answers in the
universe and would break down its complexity to make it digestible or
understandable for a human size. Thus, making our problems much more
easier to address.
There was one panel, a woman named Shelly, who said that “we can be
hopeful that empirical (observational and data-based) sciences at some point,
be able to figure out a mathematical model regarding the consciousness, or
underlying behaviour of a person.” I do not think that emotions or ideas or
even artistic perceptions can be drawn directly with mathematical models, it
does not work like that in the physical world. In the physical world. There is
always a process to better explain phenomenon, including the man-and-
himself dilemma. What is observed is the pattern, thus making mathematics
as a language to understand the patterns that human, or probability of
humans to exhibit a certain behaviour using empirical (observational and
data-based) evidences to, eventually, create a model explaining
consciousness, or underlying behaviour of a person. I have remembered
something about a court case, a depp-heard case, a psychiatrist, named
doctor Shannon Curry, who, based on research, observations, empirical
evidences and models, she was able to arrive at a conclusion that explained
the behaviour of two parties. She also formulated questions, in which, at some
point, became a deciding factor that explains a certain kind of behavior. With
math, she was able to calculate the probability of that person exhibiting that
kind of behavior. Again, there is a process.
In conclusion, I believe that math does reveal reality. It is the language that
describes the patterns and relationships between things. And by
understanding those patterns and relationships, we can better understand the
universe as a whole.
