Introduction:

Mitosis is the process of nuclear division. Before a eukaryotic cell can divide into
two daughter cells, all the genetic material must be replicated and carefully sorted to the two
new nuclei that are formed. The contents of the rest of the cell must be segregated as well,
and then the cell divide into two by the process of cytokinesis. The purpose of mitosis and
the subsequent cytokinesis is to produce two daughter cells that are genetically identical to
the original parental cell. Mitosis is a necessary part o producing a new being, of mending
damaged tissue, or even of creating a tumor.

Objectives:

 To identify the different stages of mitosis through the significant events that occur
 To microscopically visualize mitotic stages form living and prepared specimens

A. The Stages of Mitosis

1. Examine the stages of mitosis in the given figure.

2. We answered the following questions:
a) How many chromosomes do you see in the figure for metaphase?
16.
b) Do these chromosomes have chromatids?
Yes.
c) During which part of the cell cycle does DNA replication occur?
Interphase.
d) Do the chromosomes in prophase have chromatids?
Yes.
e) What is the spindle apparatus made from?
It is a network of microtubules also known as spindle fibers.
f) What do you think happens to the organelles during mitosis?
When mitosis occurs, some organelles are divided between the two daughter
cells.
