1/ Reported speech

TELL somebody:

Sonia TOLD me that you were ill.

I TOLD John NOT TO shout.

Ann ASKED me NOT TO tell anybody what happened.

SAY to somebody:

Ann SAID goodbye TO me and left.

2/Both/neither/either

We tried two hotels. BOTH of them were full. NEITHER of them had any rooms.

There are two good hotels in the town; you can stay at EITHER of them.

For two things:

BOTH restaurants are very goods.

BOTH OF THESE restaurants are very goods.

NEITHER restaurant is expensive.

NEITHER OF THE restaurants we went to was/were expensive.

We can go to EITHER restaurant, I don’t mind (= one or the other).

I haven’t been to EITHER OF THOSE restaurants.

Both and/ neither nor/ either or:

BOTH Ann AND Tom were late.

I was BOTH tired AND hungry when I arrived home.

NEITHER Liz NOR Robin came to the party.

She said she would contact me but she NEITHER wrote NOR phoned.

I’m not sure where he’s from; he’s EITHER Spanish OR Italian.

EITHER you apologise OR I’ll never speak to you again.


3/ AS and LIKE

AS= because (situation)

AS it was a public holiday, all the shops were shut

AS= at the same time (action)

George arrived AS Sue left

AS preposition= in the position of

A few years ago he worked AS a bus driver

AS before subject+verb

I didn’t move anything. I left everything AS I found it.

LIKE= similar to, the same as

It’s raining again. I hate weather LIKE this.

LIKE or SUCH AS= for example

Some sports, like or SUCH AS motor racing, can be dangerous.

4/ Preposition +ING

She must fed up WITH studyING.
