Our Guidance program is pleased to be offering the Rainbows program at Island View School. The Rainbows program is a peer-
to-peer support group for children who have suffered a loss (death in the family, divorce, separation, incarceration) and are
currently working through their grief and learning to deal with their feelings and emotions. This program helps:
•Develop and strengthen problem-solving skills and appropriate behavior and anger management and improve school
attendance and academic performance.
•Alleviate depression and anxiety and Reduce emotional pain and suffering.
•Improve communication in their families and Prevent destructive behavior such as involvement with gangs, alcohol, and
substance abuse.
•Expose grieving children to other kids who are "like them,” showing them that they are not alone in their grief and allowing
them to reach out.
The Rainbows program has been facilitated through the Saint John YMCA for 20+ years. The Rainbows program is broken
down into different groups and levels: Level 1 5-6 (grades K-2), Level 2 7-8 (grades 3-4), Level 3 9-11 (grades 5-6). This
program is free of charge. The YMCA supplies IVS with all the materials needed. Please note if your child participated last
winter, they would likely fit best with the next group starting in the next winter session Jan 2023 (as they will be ready to
move up to the next level instead of repeating).
