ICS 281 – Cybersecurity Name: ___________________

Helping the Community

Project #4
Your objective in this project is to produce a short “article” that will cover some aspect of
cybersecurity that is appropriate for non-IT people. Your articles should be informative,
useful, and helpful to people around you (your non-IT friends and family). The topic can be
informative; explaining some threat, concept, technology, or steps that would help your
readers be more aware of cybersecurity. When thinking about your topic/title, try to focus on
something specific – this is for an article, not a “paper” or “thesis”; think about something
short, simple, and to the point – like a magazine or newspaper article that helps readers be
more aware of cybersecurity.
Milestone 1 - Decide on a specific topic that you wish to write about. Come up with a catchy
“title” for your article. This should be sent by email to Ms. Laura Sue by midnight Friday 4/8
for approval. You can send her ideas early (its smarter to do so, since you get feedback from
her early). Once your title is approved, do your research, and write your article. The
assignment will not be accepted if you miss this milestone
Optional (but highly recommended) – Meet (virtually) with a tutor at WCC’s Writing Center
to get feedback on your article. They will help you make a solid article – if you do this, attach
the confirmation of your appointment, and brief feedback with your article and I will give out
extra credit.
General submission rules:
1) 1.5” spaces, 1” margins (all), standard 10 or 12 pt. font (Times New Roman or other
“clean” font)
2) No more than 3 pages. Images are allowed (encouraged).
3) Spell and grammar checked! (No issues should be found)

Grading will be based on depth of analysis, clarity, and completeness. Specific rubric is as
follows:
Meets requirements: 15%
Depth of Analysis 45%
Writing Quality/usefulness 40%

Turn in your project as an attachment to Laulima, using this as a “cover” (meaning your stuff
starts on page 2). Please rename the file so it includes your name (e.g. ICS281-Oshiro-p1.docx)
and also ensure you have your name put in on page 1 of this document.
I will put all the articles together and you will be able to download them from Laulima after
submission. Some of these articles may be used in various forms for this year’s National
Cyber Security Month.
