Case study: Suddenly, a profuse discharge of blood began from the nasal

Passages. The patient is worried, blows his nose, spits blood, partially Swallows it.

1. How to stop the nosebleed?

• Stay calm. If you start to get nervous, it can actually make you Bleed more. Try to relax.

• sit down and firmly pinch the soft part of your nose above your Nostrils for 10-15 minutes

• lean forward and breathe through your mouth this will drain Blood into your nose instead to the back
of your throat

• place an ice pack covered by a towel on the bridge of your nose Stay upright, rather than lying down,
as this reduces the blood Pressure in the blood vessels of your nose and will stop further Bleeding

2. What position should be given to the patient?

• Sit up, don’t lie down (By remaining upright, you reduce blood Pressure in the veins of your nose. This
discourages further Bleeding. Sitting forward will help you avoid swallowing blood, Which can irritate
your stomach)

• Keep your head above your heart.

• Lean a little bit forward. This keeps the blood from draining down The back of your throat.

3. Should the patient be taken to the hospital?

In case of any such condition: -

• You fell or hit your nose on something

• You get nosebleeds often

 Your nosebleed lasts longer than 20 minutes even after you put Pressure on it

• There’s so much bleeding that it’s hard to breathe.
