June 4, 2003 All ’03 Models With Navigation System

Introduction In some cases, when a vehicle arrives at a U.S. or Canadian port, and/or is in new
inventory at the dealer, a blank map screen may occur, as shown below, just after turning
the ignition switch ON and then touching the “I agree” switch. The only items that can be
seen are the touch switches, compass, and the vehicle icon.

This condition is not a system failure. This is due to the system position memory
originally identifying a set location near the manufacturing plant in Japan when the
vehicle is brand–new. To re–initialize the navigation system memory location, follow the
instructions on page 2.

Applicable S All 2003 model year Toyota vehicles with Navigation System.

Repair Follow the flow chart below to fix the blank map screen condition.
Procedure

No Move vehicle to another


Does the “GPS” icon appear
on the screen? location until the “GPS” icon
appears on the screen.
Yes

Wait for 20 minutes.

Does the display return Yes


Completed.
to normal?

No

Monitor the GPS condition by the following steps:

1. Diagnosis start–up by light control switch. (For Prius vehicles, refer to the
Repair Manual for diagnosis start–up method.)
a. Vehicle speed should be 0 mph (0 km/h).
b. Apply the parking brake.
c. Turn the ignition switch to ACC or ON.
d. While pressing the “INFO” switches on the multi–display, turn the light
control switch from OFF"TAIL"OFF"TAIL"OFF"TAIL"OFF.

2. Select “Navigation Check” function.


3. Select “GPS Information” function.

Does “Status” (left bottom on the screen) show “error”?

Yes No

Check the GPS antenna and


connection condition.
