SCANNING FOR NUMBERS
1 Find and circle all the numbers in the blog below. Then complete the sentences with the correct numbers from
the blog.

1 In the winter in Beijing, the coldest temperature is _____˚F.

2 In the summer in Shanghai, the highest temperature is over _____˚F.

3 In the summer in Guangzhou, temperatures are between _____ ˚F and _____˚F.

Now read the blog. Then answer the questions that follow.

Top Three Cities to Visit in China

Do you have the opportunity to visit China? If so, there are many interesting cities to see. Here is
some information on three popular cities that I strongly recommend: Beijing, Shanghai, and
Guangzhou.
The capital city Beijing is in the north of the country. There are many interesting places to visit, such
as the Great Wall and the National Museum of China. There are also many interesting kinds of
architecture, both traditional and modern. There is one challenge there: a lot of air pollution. In the
summer, it’s hot – temperatures can reach 88˚F. But if you go into a store with air conditioning, it
could be 64˚F, so bring a sweater. The winter temperatures get as low as 14˚F if you are unlucky,
but they could be as “nice” as 32˚F. Most people in Beijing speak Mandarin. In areas with a lot of
visitors, many people speak English and some speak Russian.
Shanghai is in the east of China. It is the city with the highest population. There are many
international banks and businesses in Shanghai, so there are people from all over the world. Most
people speak Shanghainese, and many people also speak Mandarin, English, and French. The city
is near the Yangtze River and has many lakes, so there are many kinds of local fish. There are also
many rice paddies, so the area has the nickname “the land of fish and rice.” The annual precipitation
is over 47 inches. In the summer, it rains about 12 days per month, and temperatures reach more
than 95˚F. The average winter temperature is about 34˚F.
Guangzhou is in the south of China, very close to Hong Kong and Macau. It is sometimes called
Canton, and it is a good place to get Cantonese food. Many people speak Cantonese, although they
may not always speak Mandarin or English. Guangzhou is the manufacturing center of China.
International trade is also important. The Canton Fair – the world’s largest trade fair – takes place
twice a year in Guangzhou. As for the weather, humidity can reach 82% in the summer!
Temperatures are then around 91˚F, although they can sometimes go down to 46˚F. In the winter,
the average temperature is 54˚F.
Are you ready for a little homework before your trip to China? Find the answers to these questions:
In which city could you go for a walk around a hutong? And where would you find “the Bund”? Please
post your answers in the comments section below.
Thanks for reading, and have a great trip!
