TITLE Pipe Welding Safe Work Practice
GENERAL Protecting workers from injuries and illnesses associated with welding
operations and by-products of the welding process
APPLICATION Joints of pipe are welded together into one continuous pipeline using
various welding methods

SUPERVISOR Supervisors are responsible to:
RESPONSIBILITY  facilitate and/or provide proper instruction to their workers on
protection requirements and training
 conduct Hazard Assessments and Site inspections.
 Ensure all workers are suitably trained and adequately qualified

WORKER 1. Ensure certifications are kept current and valid

4. Welders shall check their equipment at frequent and regular intervals for
defects, particularly for defective cables in wet areas, and follow the
manufacturer’s recommendations.
5. Welders shall wear hand protection, respiratory equipment, eye
protection, welding helmets, foot protection, hearing protection and
protective clothing
6. Ensure buffing and grinding operators wear face shields, safety glasses,
and hearing protection.
7. Ensure full and empty cylinders be kept separate and identified.
8. Ensure cylinders are secured and in upright position.
9. Ensure flammable materials are kept out of weld areas.
10. Avoid watching arc looking directly at the welding arc without and
always wear proper eye protection.
11. Ensure grinders and buffers have proper guards installed as per
manufacturer specifications.
12. When welding or grinding use portable grinding / welding shields around
the area where work is being done so that radiant energy, sparks and
projectiles are controlled
13. Have welding cables off the ground and up in walk areas. Ensure
welding cables are wrapped and hung up when not in use and are kept
free from walks areas.
14. No contact lenses when welding. Use CSA approved safety eye wear.
15. Ensure head is kept out of the plume, where possible.
