INTRODUCTION

English language subject exploits a role in developing communication skills. One of the masteries taught in

this subject is reading, which is one of the greatest significant skills particularly for learners, and an interactive

strategy in which the reader creates a representation of a text utilizing a helpful reading strategy. The potential to

read and understand are fundamental techniques for learners to overcome and comprehend how the institution

functions because most evidence is illustrated through text. Many researchers like Ogbodo (2002), Bhan & Gupta

(2010), and Singh (2011) have worked on reading, particularly how it influences the educational performance of

learners which indicates that reading enables cognitive improvement. They inferred that the skill to ability to

comprehend helps the academic performance of the students.

Based on the analysis of English language curriculum, the Philippines is one of the broadest English-

speaking countries with some degree of fluency in speaking the English language yet, Filipino graduates were not

automatically acknowledged as professionals in the international community because of the short duration of the

Basic Education Program. According to Sarvi, Munger, & Pillay, they mentioned that the low performance of

students and graduates of the Philippines in English, Mathematics, and Science may affect economic progression.

In some cases, these serve as a barrier for Filipinos to being perceived globally as a competitive workforce. For

these intentions, the Department of Education (Dep Ed) instructed a major reform in the country’s educational

system through Republic Act No.0533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 also known as the K to 12

Basic Education Program (K to 12 BEP). The purpose of this reform is to develop responsible and valuable life-

long learners prepared with necessary skills and abilities for employment. As English is one of the components of

this curricular reform, the content, procedures and curriculum design were also affected. It is a given that the

curriculum influences a significant role in the education system. It affects standardized selection of skills,

knowledge, and values that lead to understanding of the 4 W’s, and how of the teaching and learning process.

Based on the identification that has been held, there were Junior High School learners who had difficulty in

reading comprehension. Lack of understanding of learners were discerned when they re-wrote the text topic

established on the issues' given. This situation affects the capacity of students to strengthen their pace with the

learning process which also lends an impact on the learning outcomes because the learning resources utilized in
schools tend to be illustrated in written text, that need students to be able to comprehend the text. As the result, this

study was undertaken to analyze the curriculum adaptations in the English program to develop reading

comprehension of Junior High School of Saint Christopher Academy.
