The trip of a lifetime

After graduating from college with a degree in geology, I decided to apply for a job in Australia or
South Africa. I ended up taking a job at a gold mine in South Africa. I had worked there for two
months during my summer vacation, so I was already somewhat familiar with the area.

Deciding to leave my family and friends was a difficult decision, but I was young and adventurous at
the time and needed a challenge.

After working for six months straight and making some new friends, I decided to go on a camping trip
with a friend. We decided to go to the Okavango Delta in Botswana because we’d heard from
colleagues that you could go on walking tours through the bush there. The idea of being so close to
nature really appealed to me, and I wasn’t afraid at all. You really should go on a trip like this if
you are adventurous.

We decided to stay at a campsite in Maun near the delta the night before so we could make an early
start the next morning. The next day, we went into a small village on the edge of the delta to find a
guide to accompany us on our trip. It would have been much too dangerous for us to go on our own.
We found a guide very easily because most of the villagers were unemployed and relied on tourism
for income. This man had experience paddling a canoe through the delta and also a good knowledge
of the area, as well as knowing where to find the wildlife.

Soon we were off on the trip of a lifetime. We relaxed in the canoe taking in the incredibly beautiful
scenery as the canoe was paddled through the water. At first, we saw many different kinds of birds.
Then we saw a herd of reedbuck, a kind of deer. Our guide said that to see more wildlife we would
need to moor the canoe at a special mooring point and walk from there. We had been walking for
more than two hours and were getting tired but hadn’t seen anything, when, suddenly, we came across
two black rhinos grazing. What a sight that was!

That night, we camped in the bush and made a fire to keep the wild animals away because nighttime is
when many of them come out to hunt. The next day we came across a lone hippopotamus in the water.
The guide became very scared, and we began to feel the danger. Hippopotamuses are extremely
dangerous and known for attacking canoes. We immediately turned around and went a different way
to avoid it. That was the highlight of our trip!
