Shirk (associating partners) in the worship of Allah.

Allah says: “Verily, Allah does not forgive that partners

be associated with Him in worship (i.e. Shirk), but He
forgives what is less than that to whom He
wills.” [Surah An-Nisaa: 116]
Ash-Shirk

Sheikh Saalih Al Fawzaan defines ash-shirk as:

“To divert something from the categories of worship to other

then Allah, such as supplication, sacrifice, swearing, and
asking for help from other than Allah in that which nothing
has any power over except for Allaah.”
It is of three categories:

‫ الشرك األكبر‬- Ash Shirk Al Akbar - Greater (or major) shirk

‫ الشرك األصغر‬- Ash Shirk Al Asghar - Lesser (or minor) shirk

‫ الشرك الخفي‬- Ash Shirk Al Khafee - Hidden shirk

Ash Shirk Al Akbar is of Four Categories:

The First: Shirk of Supplication

The Proof: “And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allaah,
making their Faith pure for Him only, but when He brings them safely
to land, behold, they give a share of their worship to others. –(Surat
al-‘Ankiboot, Ayat 65)

Ash Shirk Al Akbar is of Four Categories:

The Second: Shirk of Intention, Desire, and Purpose

The proof: “Whoever desires the quick-passing (transitory enjoyment

of this world), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like.
Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell; he will burn
therein disgraced and rejected (far away from Allah’s Mercy).

–( al-Israa, Ayat 18)

The Third: Shirk of Obedience

The proof : “They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their
monks to be their lords besides Allaah (by obeying them in things that
they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without
being ordered by Allaah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah,
son of Maryam, while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded to
worship none but One Ilaah (God – Allaah), La ilaaha ila Huwa (none
has the right to be worshipped but He). Glorified is He (far above is He)
from having the partners they associate (with Him).”

– at-Tawbah, Ayat 31

The Fourth: Shirk of Love

The proof: “And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others
besides Allaah as rivals (to Allaah). They love them as they love Allah.”

–(Surat al-Baqarah: Ayat 165)

The Second Category from the Categories of Shirk:
ash-Shirk Asghar- the Lesser (Minor) Shirk

It is ar-riyaa’ (‫)الرياء‬- showing off /engaging in acts for the sake of the
recognition by the people.

The proof: “So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him
work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of
his Lord.” –(Surat al-Kahf, from Ayat 110)
The Third Category - Ash-Shirk khafee - Hidden shirk:

The proof:

“Ash-Shirk in this Ummah (nation) is more hidden than the

creeping black ant on a black piece of wood in the
darkness of the night.”

(Musnad of Imaam Ahmad No. 18781)

The difference between Major Shirk and Minor Shirk is as follows:

1.Major Shirk ejects one from the Religion and Minor Shirk does not eject
one from the Religion.

2.The one who commits Major Shirk will reside in the Fire, and the one who
commits Minor Shirk will not reside in it, even if he enters it at first.

3.Major Shirk nullifies all good deeds, and Minor Shirk does not nullify all
good deeds; it only nullifies those good deeds in which riyaa‘, or an action
done for the sake of worldly gain are mixed.

4. Major Shirk makes ones blood and wealth lawful, and Minor Shirk does
not make these things lawful.
Ma’qil ibn Yasar reported: I departed with Abu Bakr to meet the
Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and he said, “O Abu Bakr, there is idolatry among
you more hidden than the crawling of an ant.” Abu Bakr said,
“Is there idolatry other than to make another god alongside
Allah?” The Prophet ‫ﷺ‬said, “By one in whose hand is my soul,
there is idolatry more hidden than the crawling of an ant. Shall I
not tell you something to say to rid you of it both minor and
major? Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in you that I associate
partners with you while I know, and I seek your forgiveness for
what I do not know.”
