- In Question 3, the candidate described and explained correctly the favourable factors for farming development in
Central Valley with reference to the information provided in the map extract. He/she also explained the climatic
constraints on farming in Central Valley. He/she explained clearly the reasons for and against the adoption of
sprinkler irrigation in Central Valley. He/she demonstrated a clear understanding of the effectiveness of
precision farming in tackling the climatic constraints in Central Valley.
- In Question 4, the candidate interpreted logically a range of geographical concepts. He/she described the
climatic conditions of the tropical rainforest and explained their influence on the characteristics of vegetation.
He/she described and explained the negative impact of human interference on the physical environment of
tropical rainforest. He/she also demonstrated a good use of geographical terminology in evaluating the
effectiveness of selective logging in conserving tropical rainforest.
- In the short essay question, the candidate showed a general understanding of how human activities increase the
concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. He/she provided a clear analysis of whether cooperation
between more developed countries and less developed countries can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

- The candidate exhibited a balanced performance in both the structured question and the short essay question.
He/she demonstrated sound knowledge of the curriculum and communicated his/her knowledge and understanding
with accurate use of geographical terminology.
- In the structured question, the candidate demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of industrial development in the
Zhujiang Delta Region. He/she analysed data systematically and logically. He/she also presented the
ideas clearly using geographical concepts. Besides explaining clearly the challenges encountered by industries in
the 2010s, the candidate suggested related measures entrepreneurs had adopted to meet the challenges. He/she
also showed good understanding of the policy of “Emptying the Cage for New Birds” and provided coherent
and relevant comments.
- In the short essay question, the candidate analysed, synthesised and interpreted logically a range of
geographical concepts. The candidate communicated his/her knowledge and understanding of the impact of
drought on agriculture and industries in a coherent and logical manner. He/she also provided a clear explanation
of the effectiveness of water resource management in reducing the impact of drought. He/she could have
scored higher marks if he/she had provided actual examples of the impact of drought and the water resource
management measures adopted in North China.
