To address sustainability issues in the fashion industry, several institutions have emerged.

For
example, Ethical Trading Initiative and The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) provide a
guideline to businesses on how to measure compliance, set suggestions for chemical limits that
can be used, and provide a platform to share practices among members. In addition, SAC
introduced the Higg Index, a "standardized" approach to measure sustainability level of a
company, especially in fashion industry. The index uses 5 tools: Brand & Retail Module,
Materials Sustainability Index, Product Module, Facility Environmental Module, and Facility,
Social, & Labor Module. Its look like a promising tool to have an index that is comparable
against entities. However, it raises concern as the data is not publicly accessible and creates
barrier for external parties to validate the number.
