CC: The million $ mistake:
crypto.com botched up and transferred $10.5M rather $100 of refund
PC: 7news, Melbourne: Back in December 2021, It rained funds for two Melbourne women,
Manivel Thevamanogari and her sister Gangadory Thevamanogari after crypto.com barked
up the wrong tree and transferred $10.5 million instead of $100 to the women and didn’t
discover the error until 7 months later in an annual audit.
The mistake was explained as: The admin officials accidentally entered her account number
into the payment field rather than the refund amount.
Now, seven months on, the company has launched legal action against Manivel and her
sister, after realising its mistake and the Victoria Supreme Court has recently ruled that the
funds must be returned to the company.
However, the women went on a spending spree after receiving the credit and spent $1.35
million worth of the funds on a five-bedroom luxury home.
She has been ordered to sell the property and return the remaining funds or face potential
contempt of court charges. Manivel now also owes interest of $27,369.64.
Justin Lawrence from Henderson and Ball Lawyers said: "There's no doubt that if you saw
that in your account, you would know it shouldn't be there, and the onus is actually on you to
call the sender and say, look, that shouldn't have come into my account."
