The diaphragm pump is used to produce a primary vacuum, as the molecular drag pump produces a high vac-
uum into the spectrometer.
The length of the pumping pipe is about two meters. The volume of the pipe is a buffer that permits
the molecular drag pump to continue to run correctly as long as the diaphragm pump is halted. Do not
use another pipe or do not shorten the supplied pipe.
When you turn off the pumping system supply, wait at least five minutes before opening the ventilation
valve of the spectrometer. The delay is necessary in order to let the molecular drag pump to stop completely.
Warning!
An abrupt opening of the ventilation valve while the molecular drag pump turns at
high speed is very dangerous (exploding risk) and can cause damages to the pump
and possible injuries to the persons around the pump.
For the version 2, the diagram shows the power distribution for the two pumps and the intermediary valve.
The two boards are fixed on a bracket, the later being located on the left side of the right inferior bay of the
instrument (see the Reference Manual, chapter Layout and Controls). The version 3 has no intermediary
valve and the board is directly fixed on the left side of the right inferior bay of the instrument.
Only for version 2, but the board remains used in the case of the replacement of the KNF pump by an ARL
MP1-V3 pump (retrofit).

Except the 230 VAC power for the converter board of the molecular drag pump, the switching board has two
functions that are later expressed in the section Diaphragm Pump.
♦ control the diaphragm pump intermittently,
♦ generate a delay for the intermediary valve switching.
The molecular drag pump converter board produces the +12 VDC low voltage for the switching board.
