Objective: C. Communicating
i. use appropriate mathematical language (notation, symbols and
terminology) in both oral and written explanations
In this Exploration, you will need 10 use appropriate and accurate notation in your
sketches to be able to convince others that your answers are justified.
One method you may have discussed in the Activity is to use the shadow of
a building to measure its height. You are now going to explore two methods
to find out how tall your school is without actually measuring its height.
Method 1: Shadow
1 Sketch the building and its shadow in your notebook, and draw the
right-angled triangle that is represented by this situation. Label the sides
of the triangle.
2 Determine what measurements you would need to make in order to use
trigonometric ratios to calculate the height of the building. If you can,
make these measurements.
w
Use your sketch to determine which trigonometric ratio will help you
find the height of the building. Write down the trigonometric equation
that represents the situation. (Solve it if you have actual measurements.)
Method 2: Mirror
1 “Puta small mirror on the ground and stand far enough away that you
can see the top of the building in the middle of the mirror.
2 Measure your distance to the mirror, your height and the distance of the
building to the mirror.
w
Sketch the situation and indicate the measurements in your diagram.
4 Justify how the two triangles in your diagram are related.
Explain how you could calculate the height of the building a using
trigonometric ratios and b without using trigonometric ratios.
