INTRODUCTION

The book "the house on mango street" talks about the life of a teenager named

Esperanza, the author of the book narrates the facts of how the life of this girl develops

after she and her family move to a house in the mango street, and how she felt about

this series of events, the stereotyped society that surrounds her makes her feel afraid

to express her identity and sexuality more, she feels ashamed because her family is

poor and this makes it even more difficult for her to have the freedom to feel safe in her

society, her friends go through something similar and this makes her feel even more

afraid, and a clear example of this is the episode "Flip Flops" in which she feels

ashamed and insecure with herself because she is wearing something that he is not

wearing. he likes and reminds him of everything that makes him feel insecure

BODY

In the chapter "CHANCLAS" an embarrassing event occurs, the author suggests that

the shoes of Esperanza represent her sexuality, first she experiences her sexuality

when she wants to be desired by the boy at the party. As shown in the chapter, the boy

asks her to dance, but because of the shame she feels because of the big old shoes

she was wearing at the dance, she feels ashamed because she thinks that the boy will

see her ugly and also, as mentioned before, this it reminds her how poor her family is,

she tries to hide it, and this idea paralyzes her, she hides her feet and refuses to dance

with him... from this part we can understand that the only thing that matters is how it

turned out very uncomfortable, but shortly after with the help of her uncle she goes out

dancing and after a few minutes she forgets the shoes she was wearing and dances

happily and the boy who asked her to dance before is perplexed and looks at her all

night. Esperanza shows that she is still sensitive, it seems that what people think of her

affects her, and this works as an impediment so that she cannot demonstrate her

identity and sexuality.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the chapter "CHANCLAS" talks about how Esperanza's identity is

affected by the thoughts of other people, this in turn means that she does not feel the

freedom to express her sexuality in society, proof of this is because she doesn't like the

shoes she was wearing, big old shoes make her look poor and this works as an

impediment so that she doesn't feel free to express herself with confidence. From all

this we can deduce that Esperanza has a problem with herself, since she is too

sensitive, so she will not help her at all, and will be an obstacle to her development as

a person in her society.
