Written HW 2 PHY 121 Fall 2022

Due at the beginning of recitation in the week of September 19, 2022.

Question 1 should be completed in the pages of your Tutorial HW book. The remaining
questions should be written on one side of a lined or unlined sheet of loose-leaf paper (or on
engineering paper), with each problem starting on a new page. Be sure to staple all pages
(including sheets removed from your Tutorial HW book) together and hand them to your TA at
the beginning of recitation. For all questions, show your work and, if prompted, explain your
reasoning.

1. Complete questions 1, 2, and 3 from the homework for the tutorial Motion in two dimensions.
These homework questions are on page 19-21 of the Tutorials in Introductory Physics
Homework book.

2. An object’s position as a function of time is given by x(t) = (1.7) t – (2.2) t2 + (4.1) t3,
where x is in meters (m) and t is in seconds (s).
a. What are the units of 1.7, 2.2 and 4.1?
b. Determine the initial position, initial velocity, and initial acceleration (i.e., at t = 0 s) of
the object.
c. Determine the position, velocity, and acceleration of the object at t = 3 s.
d. Determine the average velocity of the object over the time interval from 0 to 3 s.
e. Determine the average acceleration of the object over the time interval from 0 to 3 s.

3. A ball is thrown vertically upward from a 75-m-tall building with the initial speed of 20 m/s.
The ball misses the building on its way down and hits the ground.
a. Draw and annotate/label a diagram to illustrate the given situation.
b. What is the maximum height the ball reaches above the building?
c. What is the velocity of the ball after 2 s?
d. What is the final velocity of the ball (just before it hits the ground)?
e. What is the acceleration of the ball at the highest point of its trajectory?
