INSTALLATION
Bioscape is an official Native Instruments third party Kontakt library, made for and licensed to
the free Kontakt Player so the full version of Kontakt is not required. Bioscape is fully NKS
compatible and supports Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol series.
The Bioscape serial number is to be entered into Native Access as the first step of installation.
Download Native Access on NI’s website if you haven’t installed it already.
Bioscape requires the free Kontakt Player or the full version of Kontakt 6.2 or later to load. You
can download the free Kontakt Player on NI’s website.
Bioscape is downloaded and installed directly in Native Access. Here is how to install:

Bioscape User Manual
LOADING BIOSCAPE
Open Kontakt or the Kontakt Player either as a standalone version or in your DAW, in the left
site menu choose the tab named Libraries and click Instruments to reveal the Bioscape.nki,
double click this to insert Bioscape. TIP: You can also view the PDF manual directly from this
menu, by clicking the dropdown arrow next to Instruments.
To Load a snapshot click the little dropdown arrow ① to the left of the snapshot name. If you
cannot see this arrow, then click the little camera icon next to the info icon. When you have
selected a category, you can use the < > arrows to browse through the snapshots from that
category. Depending on your computer specs, each snapshot can take up to 4-6 seconds to
load.
Bioscape ships with 446 snapshots in different categories. The snapshots are created by world
class sound designers such as Arksun, Simon Stockhausen, Claus Gahrn, Adam Pietruszko,
Empty Vessel, Luftrum, Sonic Underworld, Echo Season and Triple Spiral Audio.
To Save a snapshot you have created, click the disc / save icon ② to the right of the preset
name. Your snapshots are saved and located directly below the category folders. To find the
folder location of your saved snapshots, click the wrench icon (upper left corner) then click the
tab named Instrument Options then click Snapshot and then click Show.

Waveform Display ②
Click directly in the waveform display to load up sounds from the selected category. There are
345 different waveforms to choose from and with few exceptions, they are all field recordings
and found sounds only - with no synthesized elements. Recordings are seamlessly looped and
mapped to pitch so they can be played in harmony regardless of category, this creates a unique
and harmonic synergy between all sound sources.
When you load a waveform it will be displayed as mono, but all sound sources are in stereo.
The dimmed box inside the display shows the original loop points of each source. Per default,
all waveforms will loop within this range.
The field recordings are contributed and licensed by professional field recordists such as George
Vlad, Thomas Rex Beverly, Nathan Moody, Magnus Bergsson, Marcel Gnauk, Alexander Hardt,
Andrew Martin, Claus Gahrn, Jez Riley French, Felix Blume, Hendrik Walcher, Kostas Loukovikas,
Michael Northam, Michael Peters and Stephan Marche.

Bioscape User Manual
● FWD LOOP - plays the waveform in a forward loop, from start marker to end.
● REV LOOP - plays the waveform in a reverse loop, from end marker to start.
● FWD STOP - plays the waveform from start point and then stops at the end point.
● REV STOP - plays the waveform from the end marker and then stops at the start marker.
● PING PONG - plays the waveform from start to end and then ping-pongs back and forth
between the start and end marker.
When KEYTRK is set to on, the waveform will follow pitch when you play up and down the
keyboard. Set to off, and the pitch will be constant and not change when you play across
keyrange, pitch will stay the same on all notes played.
When NATIVE is turned on, playback is using the original loop illustrated by the dimmed box
inside the display, which is the native and original loop. Per default, all sounds will loop within
this range. When turned on, one end of the waveform slider (see below) will be locked.
When RETRIG is turned on, envelopes retrigger with each key press (in other words, the
playback of the waveform starts over) and all new notes will start at the beginning of the loop.
ode per layer and all subsequent notes will
When set to off, all notes are in polyphonic legato m
continue playback from the current position in the waveform timeline, without retriggering the
envelopes, this will ensure smooth transition when playing textures as no envelopes are
restarting its cycle at key trigger.
7
Bioscape User Manual
When NATIVE is turned off, then you have full control over the waveform start and end markers
and you can freely position them in any position. Playback will be between the newly set
markers, unless a native loop start/end position is encountered during playback, then it will
trigger the loop instead.
There are 4 x User Slots per snapshot. You can drag & drop single waveforms but not
multi-samples. If there are loop points set in the wave file, it will load the set loop point too.
When you save a snapshot with user samples, it will remember the location of your dragged
waveforms next time you load the snapshot. It will not create an extra copy of your waveform
and will not load, if the sample / waveform is moved outside the folder it was dragged from.

Bioscape User Manual
There are two tabs for the envelopes, a MAIN tab and a FILTER tab and each side of the interface
is controlling the layer and waveform directly above them. That means, the left side envelopes
and filters apply to layer A or C and the right side to layer B or D. (For instance, to adjust the
envelopes and filter of Layer A, make sure dual layer AB is selected on top of the interface).
In the MAIN tab you will find the amp ADSR envelope, the panning and the tuning of the layer
(+/- 36 semitones) as well as the velocity control and the keyfollow of the amplitude. You can
also directly select the filter type via the filter dropdown arrow.
In the FILTER tab, you will find the filter envelope, the cutoff frequency, the resonance as well as
the filter envelope amount for the cutoff and the keyfollow for the filter. When this tab is
active, you will also notice the velocity control, as a small fader beneath the filter type. The
filter envelope works as a standard filter envelope with one limitation: The filter Release time,
will only have effect in N ATIVE mode and only if R ETRIG is turned on and it will not have any
effect if playback is set to P ING PONG mode. This is due to how sounds are looped and scripted.
There are 24 different filter types per layer to choose from. From Lowpass (LP) filters to
Highpass (HP) and Bandpass (BP) filters, plus formant and notch filters. The filters types range
from 2-pole to 4-pole filters with State Variable (SV), Ladder and Adaptive Resonance (AR)
filters, per filter category (LP, HP and BP).

Bioscape User Manual
When both DNA genetic types are selected, they form a phrase in the upper and lower field
such as Frozen Cells, Dark Microcosm, Bowed Carbon, Reversed Space etc. and doing
experimentations are the best way to explore the many different breeds. Not all mutations are
suitable for all snapshots and sounds.
For a detailed overview of all the genetic types and the settings they each change, then look at
page 21-24 to get a deeper “look behind the scenes”.
NOTE: For saved snapshots, mutations are non-destructive, if the snapshot has been saved first.
To revert back to the original snapshot, just select the two empty mutation fields. When you
use mutate with snapshots that are not saved first, then you will alter the settings permanently.
The non-destructive feature requires for the snapshot to be saved first.

MOTION RECORDING
One of the key features in Bioscape is the recording automation - a powerful tool that uses
recorded motion to change various parameters of the sound, over time. This can create organic
and dynamic movement to the cutoff, volume, pitch, panning and the effects while morphing
between the layers - all happening at the same time, from slow subtle ambient movements to
fast and drastic effects. There are seven recording parameters in total: 3 x modulation, 3 x
effects and 1 x XY pad. These can all be recorded with individual duration and length and be
active and played back at the same time.
To record: Click a recording button next to the part you want to record, it now turns red, press
a key on your midi keyboard and move the fader, let go of the key and click the record button
again to stop recording. Note: While the recording button is active and red, nothing will be
recorded, until you press a key on your midi keyboard.
To playback: Make sure the play button is active, then press a key on your midi keyboard to
play back the recorded motion data. Your recording is not played back, unless a key is pressed.
It sort of acts like a tape machine, where recording and playback is triggered by your key press.
You can reset any recording back to default. Use ctrl+click (PC) or cmd+click (Mac) on a
recording button to initialize and reset the recording for that specific control.
Recordings are saved together with the snapshot but you can also save your recorded motion
data separately, by using the import / export feature (see next chapter).
11
Bioscape User Manual
You can set the speed ④ of your recorded motion data from original speed to half speed or
double speed and you can sync ⑤ the motion to host tempo, or make playback retrigger ⑥
with each key press.
All these settings apply to motion in the Quick Mod and the Quick FX controls too, and not only
the XY pad alone. From the playback modes to the sync, speed, quantize and retrigger options.
Note: The Q feature ② is based on note value and will only take effect when the sync button is
activated and it only works with user recorded motion data. The Q option keeps a block or
repeating pattern of a recording duration in sync, while discarding (clipping, trimming) the rest
of the recording. This process is non-destructive, so setting Q back to off will not erase any data
from the original recording. (For example, select the 1/1 option and it will cut everything else
from the playback and only play a repeating pattern of motion with exactly one whole note of
duration).
12
Bioscape User Manual
The mod sources to select from, are the amp and filter envelopes, the LFOs and the sequencers,
but also the modwheel and aftertouch can be selected.
When an envelope is chosen as the mod source, it will always be the envelope of the target it is
going to modulate (for instance, selecting F ILT ENV to modulate PAN A then it’s the filter
envelope of Layer A which is the source of modulation). M ultiple sources can be used
simultaneously but only destination can be chosen as the target and once chosen, it will no
longer be available from the other quick mod controls.
QUICK FX CONTROLS
There are three Quick FX controls. These are uni-polar
controls to adjust the MIX of individual effects. You choose
the effects below the faders. The faders can be recorded
using the record / play buttons (see page 12).
For the effects to have any effect (heh!) they need to be turned on, in the effects tab. The
faders are adjusting the MIX settings of the effects, while Distortion will adjust the DRIVE
instead.
13
Bioscape User Manual
MODULATION
Bioscape contains four Step Sequencers. The modulation targets are set up from the Quick
Mod in the main tab. The steps can be set from 2 to 64 steps and with creative settings, it can
act as an extra LFO. The rate knob will always work in sync mode from 1/1 up to 1/32t and
ETRIG to on will retrigger the sequencer with each key press.
setting the R
Bioscape contains three LFOs. The modulation targets are selected from the Quick Mod in the
main tab. The LFO waveforms are Sine, Triangle, Square and Saw. The Rate value can be set
from 0.01 Hz to 21 kHz and can be synced with the S YNC button, with values from 12/1 to
1/256. The Fade In defines how long it takes for the LFO to be at full effect (up to 10 seconds)
when a key is pressed. LFOs are free running but can be set to retrigger using the RETRIG
button.
Modulation and Aftertouch can be set to different targets, in the bottom part of the interface,
targets range from cutoff frequency to different effect mix and Quick Mod values too. The
RANDOMIZE button in the top, randomizes everything from sequencer values to steps and rates
including all LFO types, rates and fade in values, plus the sync and retrigger options too. The
only parts left unaffected, are modwheel and aftertouch settings.

EFFECTS
Each dual layer part AB and CD has its own effect chain with Chorus, Phaser, Distortion, EQ,
Timestop and Replika Delay effects. The Reverb i s a global effect. This user guide will cover the
Reverb and the Replika Delay and for in-depth documentation regarding the other effects,
please refer to the Application Reference manual of Kontakt.
The Reverb is a highly realistic convolution reverb, replicating acoustical behavior of classic
hardware units mixed with special IRs from Bioscape sound sources. There are 38 reverb types:
The Replika Delay effect is based on the dedicated Replika XT delay plugin, containing five high
fidelity delay algorithms. Each algorithm has its own characteristic:
● Modern is a clean delay, with saturation and filter controls that allow you to add
warmth and colour to your sound
● Analogue offers four Bucket Brigade delay models that replicate the character sound of
BBD chips, from subtle distortion and warmth, to clean and smooth sounds
● Tape reproduces the sound of tape delay, modelled on the physical mechanisms that
make up early tape machines, with controls for Tape Age, Flutter and Saturation
● Vintage emulates the sound of early digital delay units. Select between four quality
levels that model the behaviour of vintage delays with a limited sample memory size
● Diffusion can produce a standard delay effect, but it is best used for its huge,
diffusion-based reverb sound. This mode is ideal for ambient music and sound design.
15
Bioscape User Manual
The ? button in the lower right part of the interface contains global settings that can be
changed depending on personal preferences. These settings need only to be changed once.
When saving the project in your DAW, the settings are saved and recalled next time you load up
Bioscape and will remain when you browse and load snapshots too.
GUI Size - you can switch between two different interface sizes: Standard and Large. You will be
prompted to click the “!” button in the upper right corner of Kontakt, for the size change to
take effect. On many laptops, the Standard size might be preferred. On desktop screens, the
Large interface is often favored.
Category Mode - when you browse from one sound category to the other, this will per default
auto-select and load the first waveform from the next category. With the Browse mode active,
this will not auto-select the first sound from the next category but will leave the waveform in
place and not change when switching category. In Browse mode, whatever waveform loaded
will stay but be displayed as the last name in the next category, until you load a new waveform.
(For example: You have Quiet Desert from the Deserts category loaded, now you change
category to Water, the last waveform in the Water category will now display Quiet Desert, until
you select a waveform from the new category. Unfortunately, it is not possible to not display the
waveform from the previous category when in Browse mode, it’s a scripting thing).
Tune Knob Step - when changing the tune of individual layers, this is per default snap in
semitone steps, but if you prefer to have the knobs move freely in cents instead, this is the
setting to change.
Pitchwheel Range - per default, the pitchwheel moves in 2 semitone steps, but you can change
this to a value you prefer, up to 24 semitones (two full octaves).

CPU CONSUMPTION
While snapshots in Bioscape are designed with CPU preservation in mind, some can be CPU
demanding in certain situations, in particular if multiple layers are in use simultaneously with
the Timestop feature active plus the use of long release times and multiple effects. To preserve
and minimize CPU usage, here are some useful tips in prioritized order:
● Reduce layers using the Timestop feature and turn Timestop OFF
● Turn OFF the Replika Delay effect for AB or CD
● Turn OFF the Reverb effect for AB or CD
● Reduce release times of the Amp Envelopes of active layers
● Reduce the amount of active layers.
