7.4. Teaching grammar
The set of meaningful structures and patterns that make up grammar is constrained by
certain pragmatic rules (Larsen-Freeman, 2001). Grammar is the foundation of the
English language because it enables students to construct stronger sentences in their
speaking and writing performances. Learning proper grammar enables students to
construct understandable sentences. There are several approaches in grammar teaching,
and each teacher applies different methods customed for their classes. When teaching
grammar, I usually introduce an example of the use for students to be unintentionally
aware of grammatical function. Next, I will analyze the sentence structure to draw out the
form of grammar. Then, I explain how to apply this grammar and ask them to practice by
writing or speaking. After that, I deliver the worksheet for them to review again, and I
will clarify what they have not understood yet. For some people, teaching grammar is
quite boring or even unnecessary because they think that grammar is acquired naturally
instead of teaching. However, my students who have studied listening and speaking with
native speakers are not aware of grammatical mistakes when speaking or writing. Maybe
they can acquire the basic grammar rules, but it is impossible for the more complicated
ones. It is obvious that if they want to pursue higher education or learn English for a
special purpose, they have to master the grammar rules. Actually, teachers need enough
knowledge to analyze the grammar structure, so teaching grammar is difficult.
Furthermore, each student is suitable for different learning styles, so teachers have to
custom their method of teaching.
