THE HUMAN VOICE AND SPEECH

The human voice has an overwhelming effect on one’s personal and


professional success. It can create an impression from other people of
how well one speaks on the bases of: pitch level, clarity, intelligibility, tone,
volume, and eloquence of the voice.

The voice is actually the revelation of one self such as:

1. Age - by the quality of your voice, your age can be detected by


your listeners even without seeing you.

2. Sex - the voice is the indicator of one’s gender. Females usually


have sweet voice

3. Physical Condition - one uses soft voice when sick and not
feeling well. On the other hand, the voice indicates good health if
it is dynamic, alert and vibrant.

4. Intelligence - is greatly manifested by the way you use your


voice. When the speaker knows the topic fully well, he can be
clear and articulate with well enunciation.

5. Personality - if you use a well modulated voice with proper


blending, varied pitch levels and tempo, the people will be
convinced that you are confident and that you know your subject
matter. But if you speak hastily, the people will think that you are
nervous or not sure of what you are talking about. Also, the
audience or listeners may have the impression that you are in a
hurry because of lack of preparation.
6. Social Origin - the place or country from where you have
originated is revealed by the way you speak because of your
regional accent.

If you want to make your voice as your potential asset:

● you should try your best to improve it.


● You should learn how to control it, to increase its vitality,
intelligibility, and your power.
● You should be decisive to possess a voice that is pleasing to the
ear.

Voice and Speech - are two different things.

Voice is the raw sound produced by the vibration of the vocal


cords in the throat. This raw sound is shaped into words and is called
the Speech. With the use of speech organs the sound is given shape
and vitality.

Voice can verbally operate without speech, but speech cannot make
sense at all without voice.

Words for Recall:

Eloquence - fluent or persuasive speaking

Dynamic - positive attitude; full of energy and ideas

Vibrant - full of energy and enthusiasm

Articulate - ability to speak fluently and coherently


Coherent - logical and consistent

Enunciation - the way of pronouncing words

Modulated - control or adjust the voice choosing to go louder or softer


faster or slower, dramatic or emotional

Blending - joining the beginning of one word and the end of another
to make a new word with a new meaning

Tempo - the rate of speed in speaking

Hastily - hurriedly

Accent - distinct mode of pronunciation of a language associated with


a particular nation, locality or social class

Vitality - the state of being strong and active

Intelligibility - capable of being understood

Decisive -ability to make decisions quickly and effectively.

Inflection - the change of pitch within a word

Pitch - the highness or lowness of the voice

The Speech Organs (articulators)


Lips, teeth, alveolar ridge, hard palate, velum (soft palate), uvula,
glottis and tongue
Practice Exercise:

Below are some expressions that you can say aloud as you
change your inflection (Just like when you are pleased, happy,
irritated, emphatic, sarcastic or sad)

I am sorry to hear that. I think you’re right
