1.) Give three examples of ancient and modern
technologies, including who invented them and when.

Modern

● 1830s and ‘40s, when Samuel F.B. Morse developed the telegraph, the system of
sending messages (translated into beeping sounds) along wires.
● 1876 in the form of Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, which allowed the human voice
to travel through wires over long distances.
● In 1923, Zworykin was employed at the Pittsburgh-based manufacturing company
Westinghouse when he applied for his first television patent, for the “Iconoscope,” which
used cathode ray tubes to transmit images.

Ancient
● The steam engine was first invented by Heron Alexandrinus in 1st Century Greece. Until
1577 it was forgotten until Taqu al-Din reinvented the device.
● A seismometer was invented in 132 AD by Zhang Heng in ancient China. Its purpose
was to detect earthquakes in many remote regions of China.
● The toothbrush was first designed by William Addis in 1780 in England. However, the
first toothbrushes date back to 3500 to 3000 BC in Babylonia and Egypt.

2.) Name three Filipino inventors or scientists,

as well as their inventions.
● Agapito Flores has been acclaimed by some as being the inventor of the first fluorescent
lamp.
● Felix Maramba built a coconut oil-fueled power generator.
● Angel Alcala is behind the invention of artifical coral reefs used for fisheries in Southeast
Asia.

3.) What would you invent if you could create a

new technology that would improve your life, and why?

For me I would like to invent a machine that can predict someone's disease. In the future, health
predictions can be made depending on a person’s genome. Diseases such as heart disease or
diabetes can be predicted, allowing for faster treatment. This development can pave the way for
personalized medicine. This kind of invention is a helpful one not just for me but for everyone
around the world.
