The annual ranking by the Ministry of HRD has put IITs, IISc among top-

ranking institutes and are promoting these institutes as the hubs for 'Study
in India'. However, the institutes have failed to perform in global rankings
this year including both THE and QS rankings.
 IITs have again scored big in the list with IIT Madras emerging as
the best in overall category. IIT Madras has also emerged as the top
institute in engineering category, followed by IIT Delhi and IIT
Bombay at second and third ranks.

 Among colleges, top three spots have been taken over by Delhi
University colleges. Miranda House, Lady Shri Ram College, and
Hindu College have been ranked first, second, and third among
colleges respectively.
 IISc Bengaluru has maintained its status as one
of the best institutes in the country and has been
ranked at second place in the overall ranking.

 It has also been adjudged as the best


university in the country followed by
Jawaharlal Nehru University at the
second place again.
 Banaras Hindu University has taken the third
spot on top universities list.
 This is the first year of including and announcing Dental
Institute rankings. Maulana Azad Institute of Dental
Sciences, Delhi has emerged as the best institute.
Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Udupi, is at second
rank and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune is at third rank.
 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)
rankings for educational institutions in India.
 NIRF rankings were launched in 2015 and the first ranks were
announced in 2016. Since the first rankings, the number of categories
has increased from four to nine.

 In 2019, MHRD also released, for the first time, Atal Ranking of
Institutions for Innovation Achievements or ARIIA rankings. However,
ARIIA rankings were not announced this year during the online
announcement of Higher Education Institute rankings.
NIRF parameters
NIRF rankings are awarded based on the following
parameters - Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research
and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes,
Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.

NIRF 2020 has ranked institutions across 9 categories: Overall,


university, engineering, management, pharmacy, college,
medical, law, architecture and dental

 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World
University Rankings 2021 were released on June 10
and as in recent years, India’s performance wasn’t all
that good.

 No Indian institute secured a position among the top 100


universities of the world, and like last year’s QS
rankings, IIT Bombay, Indian Institute of Science
Bengaluru, and IIT Delhi featured in the top 200 list.
 The top 10 universities of the world comprised mainly the top-
notch Ivy League colleges from the US, the UK and even one from
Switzerland.
 While Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) secured Rank 1,
Stanford and Harvard universities secured the next two ranks in
the list of the world’s best universities.
IIT Bombay dropped 20 spots -- from 152 to 172,
IISC Bengaluru dropped just one spot from 184 to
185, and IIT Delhi dropped 11 spots from 182 to
193.
The QS World University Rankings measures institutes on 6
factors reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty,
employer reputation, international faculty ratio, and student
ratio.
