Research topic: Mastery of Four Fundamental Operations

Research title: Effects of Modular Learning on the Mastery of Four

Fundamental Operations in Grade 7 Students

Background of the Study

Even the most complex mathematical theories can use addition,

subtraction, multiplication, and division. As a result, one of the keys to

improving math comprehension is mastering them. All facets of mathematics

start with an understanding of how numbers operate. As they advance

through the grades, students learn about various kinds of figures and how

they respond to operations. For them to move along in future math studies as

well as in daily life, it's critical for grade 7 students to feel confident applying

the four operations. For instance, the development of the following concepts,

such as additional arithmetical operations, calculations resulting from

1
measurements, and algebra, depends on the development of a strong

knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

This study sought to assess the effect of modular learning on students'

mastery on the four fundamental operations. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic,

face-to-face interaction between students and teachers has been suspended

within our school. This pandemic has paved the way for the prompt

introduction of modular learning to guarantee educational continuity. The

Philippines is currently in the process of adjusting to the new normal form of

education, and the success of this process depends on educators' ongoing

innovations and the active participation of other stakeholders. The key

purpose of this study is to determine the difficulties faced and the results of

the teaching of mathematical operations in Dulangan National High School's

application of modular learning.

The primary difficulties that the students have had to deal with this kind

of learning are self-study, a bad internet connection, and not having enough

time to complete all of the modules because of the numerous activities,

distractions, and lack of focus. Additionally, parents often answer instructional

2
modules rather than students themselves. That is the reality that exists in

homes. In order to encourage honesty and ensure the effectiveness of

learning, parents should refrain from answering to the modules; instead, they

should only offer guidance and assistance. The students are the ones who

should individually respond to the modules, as is ideal and intended.

According to the National Economic and Development Authority, in a

classroom setting, teachers may handle their math lessons very well because

there is no longer a need to compress their topics to suit the modules, which

is why face-to-face learning is preferable to online learning because "in-

person communications make our brains happy and satisfied." For students,

attending class with a real teacher is more engaging than reading a ton of

modules. By connecting with and learning from one another in a classroom

environment, students can develop more and feel more at ease.

Consider all the things you couldn't accomplish if you didn't know how

to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The four fundamental operations are

significant because of this, which is also why this study was created.
