Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on

Concentration of Solutions!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource intends to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Note to the teacher

This module contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module.
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

4
For the learner:
Welcome to the Science 7 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Concentration of
Solutions.
The hand is one of the most symbolized parts of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant
competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

2
What I Need to Know
Many of the processes that affect our environment involve substances in
solution. Most environmental problems are brought about by the formation of these
substances (e,g. the mixing of acid mists in water vapour brings acid rain).
Most of the materials that are used to regulate life processes are in the form
of solutions. The air we breathe and the water we drink are in the form of solutions.
You must have used eye drops for a clearer vision, nose drops to relieve nasal
congestion, medicinal preparations for oral ingestion, or intravenous or intramuscular
injections. These are solutions.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by preparing different
concentrations of mixtures according to uses and availability of
materials. (S7MT-Id-3);
2. solve problems involving concentration of solution in terms of percent
by mass and percent by volume.
3. show self -reliance in performing the task at home independently.

Before going on, check how much you know about this topic.
Answer the pretest on the next page in a separate sheet of paper.

What I Know

Directions: Read carefully each item. Use a separate sheet of paper for your
answers. Write only the letter of the best answer for each question.

Concentration of solutions
The degree of sweetness of a sugar solution, the intensity of the color of a

solution, that is, on the relative proportions of solute and solvent comprising each
solution.
Concentration of solutions may be expressed quantitatively in several ways.
These include percent by mass and percent by volume. Percent by mass is
commonly used to express the concentration of a solution.
Labels of products sold often show the concentrations of solutes expressed
as percent (%) by volume or mass. The alcohol used as a disinfectant is a solution of
70% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, meaning 70 mL alcohol. There are also solutions sold
as 40% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol.

of acetic acid in 100 g of vinegar.

Pure gold is refer to as 24 karats. Jewelry that is said to be 18 karats contains
18 grams of gold for every 24 grams of the material, the remaining 6 grams consists
of other metal like copper or silver. This material has a concentration of 75% gold,
that is,[18/24(100)]. A 14 karat (14K) gold contains 14 grams gold and 10 grams of
another metal, making it 53.3% gold.
Directions: Pick out the letter of your answer
1. A piece of jewelry is made up of 21K. It means that the jewelry is made up
of________
A. 21 parts of copper and 3 part is gold
B. 21 parts of gold and 3 part is copper
C. 11 parts of copper and 10 part is gold
D. 11 parts of gold and 10 part is copper

What is It

Expressing Concentration
The concentration of a solution is a measure of how much solute is dissolved
in a specific amount of solvent or solution. Concentration can be described
qualitatively using the words concentrated or dilute. Dilute means there is a little
amount of solute dissolved in a solution. Concentrated means there is a large
amount of solute dissolved in a solution.

7
However, the terms dilute and concentrated are imprecise since they describe
general quantities rather than specific amounts. The concentration of solution is
better described quantitatively. Here is a table that list the concentration ratios.
Concentration Ratios
Concentration description Ratio

Percent by mass

Percent by volume

Percent by Mass

Percent by mass =

Percent by mass equals the mass of the solute divided by the mass of the
whole solution, multiplied by 100.
Example Problem 1

concentration similar to ocean water, an aquarium must contain 3.6 g NaCl per
100.0g of water. What is the percent by mass of NaCl in the solution?
1. ANALYZE THE PROBLEM
You are given the amount of sodium chloride dissolved in 100.0g of water.

solvent.
Known Unknown
Mass of solute = 3.6 g NaCl percent by mass=?
Mass of solvent = 100.0 g H2O
2. SOLVE FOR THE UNKNOWN
Find the mass of the solution.
Mass of solution = grams of solute + grams of solvent
Mass of solution = 3.6 g + 100.0 g = 103.6 g
(Substitute mass of solute = 3.6g, and mass of solvent =100.0g)
Calculate the percent by mass.
Percent by mass = (State the equation for percent by mass)

Percent by mass =

Example Problem 3
CALCULATE PERCENT BY VOLUME: A solution is prepared by mixing 50 mL of
ethanol (C2H5OH) in 300 mL of distilled water. What the percentage concentration by
volume of the solution?
1. ANALYZE THE PROBLEM
You are given the volume of ethanol and water. The percent by volume of
a solute i , which
is the sum of the volume of the solute and the solvent.
Known Unknown
Volume of solute = 50mL (C2H5OH) percent by volume=?
Volume of solvent = 300mL H2O
2. SOLVE FOR THE UNKNOWN
Find the volume of the solution.
Volume of solution = volume of solute + volume of solvent
Volume of solution = 50mL + 300mL = 350mL
(Substitute volume of solute = 50mL, and volume of solvent =300mL)
Calculate the percent by volume.
Percent by volume = (State the equation for percent by
volume)
Percent by mass =

containing 15g sugar, 50g vinegar, and 225 g of water in % by mass. What is the
percentage by mass of a salt solution prepared by dissolving 11g of salt in 80 g of
solution?
1. ANALYZE THE PROBLEM
Known
Mass of sugar = 11g
Mass of the vinegar = 80 g
Mass of water =225g
Mass of solution = 15g+60g+225g = 300g

Unknown = concentration by mass of each component

2. SOLVE FOR THE UNKNOWN

Calculate the percent by mass of each component

2. SOLVE FOR THE UNKNOWN
(Substitute Percent by mass = )
(% by mass = )

10
Percent by mass HCl=

Let x = the mass of HCl, then

% by mass HCl=

15%=
(15)(120g)=(x)(100)
X=
X= 18g (mass of pure HCl
