CLOTHES FROM PLASTIC BOTTLES SAVE OUR
PLANET
Recently a lot of popular chain stores have released the
collections of clothes made from plastic bottles,
commonly known as PET. Why this idea is a great example
of greenwashing and why making clothes from plastic
bottles is a false solution?
Greenwashing - behaviour or activities that make people believe
that a company is doing more to protect the environment than it
really is.
3 REASONS THAT MAKES CLOTHES
FROM PLASTIC BOTTLES A BAD
SOLUTION
1
Once turned into clothing the plastic CANNOT be recycled further and will
instead be thrown away. This means clothes are on a one-way route to land ll,

2
incineration, or being dumped in nature.

Turning plastic bottles into clothes removes them from circular recycling loops
where they can be made into new bottles again. Plastic bottles can be collected
to be recycled multiple times, reducing the amount of virgin plastic needed.

3
Recycled plastic going into synthetics does NOTHING to help stop the wider problem of
micro-plastic. Billions of tiny plastic particles that shed from clothing during Photo showing one of the clothes released by
manufacturing, wearing and washing still end up polluting the ocean and our bodies H&M in 2020 in a collection made of recycled PET
through the air we breathe and the food and drink we consume.

MANIPULATIONS BY
What is Shein and what do we know about it? So, Shein is a
Chinese online ultra-fast fashion retailer. It was
established in 2008 and for rst 6 years it only ful lled the
orders from other sellers. The rst production line
became opened in 2014. From this time, Shein has been a
concern following the model of ultra-fast fashion. In short
it means tones of overproduced clothes, tones of industrial
waste and consumption of a huge amount of resources.
But on the o icial company’s website, we can read that
Shein protects the natural environment and sticks to the
sustainable development. What is the truth and which kind
of manipulations does Shein use?

Everything looks great at rst glance. Potential customer
would certainly appreciate the company’s e ort and more
willingly do shopping in this „eco-friendly” shop. But if we
go deeper, we will nd out that Shein relases
approximately 2100 - 3000 new items everyday (Coresight Materials from Shein o icial website
company data). After a quick calculation it gives 100 000 -
300 000 pieces for 24 hours! It’s an unbelievable load for
our planet.

It’s connected with the fake news about clothes from PET
bottles. Recycled materials don’t have a good in uence on the
environment. On the contrary, it leads to more micro - plastic
pollutions in oceans. What’s more, clothes made from polyester
Materials from Shein o icial website are of very poor quality (which can be seen regarding to their
prices). It results in a huge number of used clothes ending up in
the land lls.
