Henry Sy was born to a poor family in Jinjiang, China on December 25,

1924. In 1958, Sy established a small shoe store in Quiapo. He was very
cautious and prudent in managing his finances. Whatever little money
derived from the shoe store, he would immediately deposit his income in the
bank.

As a father, Henry Sy was very stern with the way his children handle
finances. He kept on telling them to save any little amount they have in the
bank.

In 1972, the savings that he and his children accumulated was added as
capital to their business. The small shoe store eventually expanded and
became the first SM Department Store in Quiapo, Manila in November 1972.
In the recent years, the name SM means Sy Mall, in honor of Henry Sy, the
founder and the President of the company.

In 2015, Henry Sy was listed in Forbes Magazine as the richest man in

the Philippines. He attributed his financial success to self-discipline, hard
work and prudence in dealing with finances.
