Assignment – 2
Due Date: 07 Sept. 2022, Wednesday

1. A new machine is to be placed in a flexible manufacturing cell consisting of four CNC

machines that are located at the following coordinates: (10, 10), (2, 10), (10, 2), and (5, 1).
The interactions, i.e., number of trips, between the new machine and the existing ones are 6,
10, 10, and 6 units per time period. Determine the optimal coordinates of the new machine,
assuming travel is along vertical and horizontal aisles.

Suppose the interaction between the new machine and each existing one in abobve problem
is 10 units. Where would you expect the new machine to be placed? Does it correspond to the
solution obtained in earlier case? Explain.

2 Use Weiszfeld method for Problem No 1 to determine the optimal location of the new
machine (Maximum iteration 3)

3 A regional telephone is attempting to determine the optimal location for a training facility for
its operators. The operators are located in four operations centers and the training facility is
to serve these centers. The coordinates of the four centers and the number of operators
working in each are given in Table 1. Assuming the rectilinear metric is the most appropriate
distance measure, determine optimal coordinates of the training facility.

4. ABC company leases and services photo copies for businesses in the tricity area of Albany,
Schenectady, and Troy. It has decided to relocate its operations to serve its customers better.
The company has four major customers—one in each city and another in the state
government campus. It is expected that the number of visits the service and marketing
departments will have to make to the four customers during each period are shown in Table
2. Assume that the travel cost is proportional to the street distance traveled. A rectilinear
distance model is used to represent travel because of the perpendicular nature of the
streets. The customers are located at (8, 12), (2, 15), (9, 18), and (8, 10), respectively.
(a) Determine the coordinates of the optimal location.
(b) Set up a linear programming model for the problem and solve it using any available
software. Verify that the answers from the software are the same as that obtained in (a).

5. The city administration wants to establish several emergency response medical unit so
that it can respond to any call in the city within 8 minutes. The city is divided into seven
population zones. The distance between the centres of zones are known and given in the
distance matrix. The response unit can be located in the centre of population zone at a
cost of 100, 80,120, 110, 90, 90 and 110 respectively. Assuming average speed during an
emergency is 80 Km/hour. Formulate an appropriate set covering model to determine
where the unit are to be located and how the population zones are to be covered. State
clearly the variables. The distance matrix between the seven zones is given in the Table
