Exercise -1

LEVEL-1.

1. The coefficient of friction is a property of the two surfaces in contact. If we double the normal
force, we double the amount of friction, but the coefficient of friction is the same, since the nature
of the two surfaces in contact has not changed.

2. The correct option is A.

i) When a small amount of force P is applied, the block will not move but the friction force will act
and it is called static friction.
ii) It will increase linearly with force P until it reaches the limiting friction Fl.
iii) When the force is applied beyond the limiting friction, the block will start to move but friction
force will slightly decrease and thereafter it will remain constant and it is called kinetic friction. Fk

3. Correct option is B)

When the body is in motion, the frictional force acting on it is kinetic friction
fk=μkN which is independent of the velocity with which the body is moving.
So the frictional force remains the same when the velocity changes from 4ms−1 to 8ms−1 i.e, 8N.
