Introduction to the Humanities Through the Arts Final Project

There is no formal final exam or midterm exam for this course. Instead, you will submit
a Final Project in Week 5 that encapsulates what you have learned throughout the
course.

The Final Project involves the following steps:

 Identify a local exhibition or presentation of this art form that you can attend by
the end of Week 4 of this course. Examples include (but are not limited to) an
art exhibition, concert, dance recital, or film.
 Select an art form you find particularly engaging, and identifying why this is
the case.
 Research the work of art you have selected, to gain understanding about the
context in which it was created.
 View the specific artwork you have chosen. (This may occur prior to, during,
or after the research, based on the availability of the presentation.)
 Write a 4- to 6-page paper that summarizes and concludes your research and
includes a thorough criticism of the piece based on what you have learned
throughout the course.
 Support your assertions by making at least two formatted references to
your course readings.

The Final Project is not due until Week 5; however, you will submit short papers (Final
Project Milestones 1–4) throughout the course that demonstrate your progress.

Consider the following guidelines for selecting the exhibition or presentation to

attend:

 If you write about a painting, sculpture, or photographic exhibit, you should locate
exhibitions or public places that you can attend.
 If you write about a film or a theatrical, musical, or dance performance, find
out what performances will be showing in your local area in the few weeks
before your Final Project is due.
 If you write about the architecture of a building, you should locate a public place
that you can visit.
 If you write about or book, locate a local book or poetry club to attend one of
its meetings.

You may consider discussing possible options with Walden librarians. Your local public
library might be of assistance in helping you find local theaters, art museums, works of
architectural importance in your area, art galleries or exhibits, etc.

The Final Project will be graded according to the Final Project rubric, and the Final
Project Milestones will be graded according to the Final Project Milestone rubrics.
These are located in the Course Information area.
